Subject: RE: Gibson Melody Maker From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 01 Apr 02 - 08:36 PM Yeah, that's about what the prices are even here in Califonia: $600 to $900. Compared to $1,600 to $3,000 for other Gibsons. Still relatively a best buy. And they might come out of the woodwork for less in some areas. |

Subject: RE: Gibson Melody Maker From: GUEST,CraigS Date: 01 Apr 02 - 07:12 PM There's a lot of value in a Melody Maker, whether it's a Les Paul or SG shape. On the other hand, the Les Paul shapes command ridiculous prices, and the SGs are rising in value. The Epiphone OlympicS have never commanded high prices and are the Epiphone equivalents of the Melody Maker. My number one electric is an Olympic. Discerning guitarists appreciate their properties - I know that David Lindley has a couple at least, and David Bromberg has one. Look for the 64-69 models - they're cheaper than the earlier Olympics. |

Subject: RE: Gibson Melody Maker From: Tweed Date: 31 Mar 02 - 09:47 PM A buddy of mine had one similar to Rolpho's clicky #2 and it was a great little guitar til his dachshund got pissed and chewed up the headstock. That was thirty years ago but I always remember the way that thing played and sounded. I think Gibson reissued them a couple years ago ( or called them Les Paul's or something). The price was pretty high. I think my buddy only paid $150 bucks for his (used,...sans dog bites). |

Subject: RE: Gibson Melody Maker From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 30 Mar 02 - 10:53 PM A very excellent guitar that should have been more successful. It has single coil pickups with a real variety of tones available. A blues monster, it can do the "wild thing" like Willie Johnson on those early Howlin' Wolf records. It can also be played soft and bassy. It was also a favorite of many 'psychedelic' musicians in the 60s. A good all around electric. Fender beat it out in looks and Gibson in those years was owned by the conglomeate Norlin and didn't push it. They preferred the profit on their more expensive guitars. An underrated guitar. It looks a little clunky but is real effective. There are two different related body styles (single or double cutaway) and they have either one or two pickups. Heads up Mudcatters, these show up in odd places from time to time and should not be real expensive. A best buy. MM clicky one. MM clicky two Wish I still had one. |

Subject: RE: Gibson Melody Maker From: DonMeixner Date: 30 Mar 02 - 10:38 PM Hi Bob, A truly great guitar. Underappreciated by the "More Power" crowd but a great guitar. Leslie West of the band Mountain played a Less paul Melody Maker for quite awhile. Great sound and great action for straight ahead R&R or for blues. Don |
