Regretfully, I have to disagree.
Practicing scales teaches you how to be good at -- scales... You need to do some music too.Find some good examples of songs or tunes in the kind of music you like; and try to find some related learning materials-tab or notation, whichever is easier for you, and practice the examples they give.

There is nothing more powerful for Old Time guitar than playing scales. Practice your G scale and C scale. Slowly until they are perfectly clean backwards and forwards. Only then slowly increase speed. Don't try to watch your fingers after you know the scale. You needn't close your eyes, just look out a point of reference. Play them every time you pick up the guitar. Cheers, Chance
