Subject: Lyr Add: ÉIST DO BHÉAL (de Paor, Spillane)
From: Áine
Date: 09 Jun 02 - 05:02 PM

Here are the lyrics in Irish and English from the CD entitled, Éist:

ÉIST DO BHÉAL by Louis de Paor and John Spillane

Ná habair m'ainm
leis an bhean a labharfaidh
i'm dhiaidh i do chluais
A bhéarfaidh aniar chughat
gealach is grian mar dhuais
Ná habair gur seana-scéal é sin
a chuala tú uaim fadó.

Curfá
Éist do bhéal
Éist do bhéal is bí ciúin
don chéad uair i do shaol
bí ciúin is éist do bhéal
do bhéilín bán, éist do bhéal

Má chloiseann tú caint
i dtábhairní an bhaile
gur ghearrasa mo ghruaig
gur daoine le Dia mé
ar d'imigh ar buile i do dhiaidh
Ná habair gur seana-scéal é sin
a chuala tú uaim fadó.

Curfá

Má chíonn tú i mbrionglóid
mé ag siúl clois toinne
lem' stuafhear rua
gan fáinne ar mhéar
gan scáil ar ár gcraiceann gan smál
Ná habair gur seana-scéal é sin
a chuala tú uaim fadó.

Curfá

Translation:

Don't mention my name
to the next woman
who whispers in your ear.
Who promises you
the sun and the moon as a prize.
Don't say that that's an old story
you heard from me long ago.

Chorus:
Shut your mouth
Shut your mouth and be quiet
for the first time in your life.
be quiet and shut your mouth
your little sweet mouth, shut your mouth.

If you hear talk
in the pubs in the town
that I've shaved my head
that I've lost my head completely
and turned into a blithering idiot because of you
Don't say that that's an old story
you heard from me long ago.

Chorus

If you see in a dream
me walking by the ocean
with a fine foxy man
no ring on our finger
no shadow on our clear skin
Don't say that that's an old story
you heard from me long ago.

Chorus

Yes, I've heard that one also, don't have the lyrics so maybe we could use this thread to seek 'Éist do Bhéal'. I love that saying, "Éist do bhéal" - it means shut your mouth and listen and says it a lot better than the likes of "dún do ghob" (shut your beak)

There is another song , Philippa, called "Eist do Bheal" which was penned by Louis de Paor and John Spillane. Lyric goes :- "Naw habair mo ainm ...etc" (Sorry cannot do Gaelic ... as yet) I have it on a CD called simply "EIST" released a few years ago.

I didn't find this in my first search, but Éist a Stór was posted about a year ago. According to you, Áine, I have cited the wrong author; it should be Máire Bhreathnach.

Éist (Listen) is a newly composed song in Irish by Máire Ní Bhraonáin (of Clannad fame). I have heard this song on the radio several times, sung I think by a woman called Gearóidín Duncan. Although the chorus is oft-repeated I can catch little apart from "Castar le chéile sinn…" (we will meet …). I like the air and I would appreciate it if someone can supply the lyrics. Also, I would be interested to know more about the singer and her other recordings.
