I've looked and don't see much discussion on Dawning of the Day. However, you mentioned a different version. There are two in the DT. I also located two off-site which you might want to look at as well:

A version of the song Masato gave a click on to, above, was sung by Delia Murphy, c 1960, on Capitol LP T10124.

Another "Spinning Wheel" that's been around since about 1690 (both as reprints of the broadside and as a traditional song) can be located in the broadside ballad index at www.erols.com/olsonw. Look for ZN230 or (Roud #) ZR4255. Betsy Miller (Ewan MacColl's mother) sang this latter "Spinning Wheel" on a Folk Lyric recording, c 1960

There are lots of songs with spinning wheels in them. I think this is the one you have in mind. THE SPINNING WHEEL

I can't find an earlier thread on its origins. McColl says: A version of this fine song is to be found in the 'Tea-Table Miscellany' but, as with many of the wongs reworked by Ramsey, it has a somewhat artificial flavour. The version given here was learned from Betsy Henry of Auchterarder."

I would suggest that it's best to add to an existing thread on a song, rather than starting a new "origin" thread. Maybe put "origin" in the title of your message in that thread. When we have ten threads on a single song, information gets lost or duplicated.

Annaraoi, I see some of the links include the origin info you are looking for, but not all. You would probably have more success, first in searching, as artbrooks suggests, then, if you still don't find the origins info, starting a thread for each song's background, with the song title and the word "origin" in the thread title. Put foggy dew in the Digitrad and Forum Search. All sorts of stuff there, both in the DT and in the Forum threads.
Annraoi, haven't you been to Mudcat before? With the exception of a few mis-named and badly indexed songs, most of the songs even remotely "trad" are here.

There are also other Irish Foggy Dews which are simple love songs; these too have been explored in some detail in previous discussions. Some judicious use of the search facilities here, will, as artbrooks says, probably find you most of what you want to know; but you will need some patience in exploring. If you want quick answers, then you need to give a bit more information so that we know which songs you mean; there are often several quite different ones with the same or similar titles.

Annroai, is that "The Foggy Dew", an Irish revolutionary song, or "The Foggy Foggy Dew" about a weaver pining for his lost love? They are two very different songs. If you enter song titles or fairly unique words from the songs in the box on the first page of the Mudcat Forum, under where it says Digitrad and Forum Search, you will pull up both the songs themselves (if in the data base), which may have authors cited, and the text of previous discussions on them. Also, your request may attract the attention of one of the several golden-hearted souls that hang out here that love to do this kind of research. Ignore the crumudgeons.

Not sure if this is the one you're requesting, but "The Old Spinning Wheel" was written by Billy Hill. 1934 I believe.
