Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 06 Feb 03 - 08:51 AM G'day again Madoka, My bookshelves have not been helpful - I have only The Overlanders, 1984, The Shearers, 1984, The Anzacs, 1986 and The Aboriginals, 1986, in my collection. I'll have to look through my Ted Egan records, cassettes and CDs to see if I have any more information ... tomorrow (or, that is, later today!). Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 05 Feb 03 - 09:55 PM G'day Madoka, That's a good question - I'll look through the various Ted Egan books that I have at home to see if there is any mention of whether he took the name from records and history - or just fitted a suitable name to the song. Ted has always be very scrupulous in his content and dealings with different cultures in song - and often consults with local representatives of the people of whom he sings. This song would have been used in his Faces of Australia series of recordings and accompanying books, but I do not have a complete collection. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: GUEST,Madoka Kanemoto Date: 02 Feb 03 - 02:00 PM Hi everyone, I am from "Nakamura'" land, Okinawa, recently visited Broome and heard "Sayonara Nakamura." I am trying to learn about the history of my people in WA. Does anyone know whether Mr. Nakamura is a ficticious hero made by Mr. Egan or real one. I have sent an email to Mr. Egan and waiting for his reply. I go to WA a few times a year and would appreciate very much if you could help me on this matter. Madoka |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Aug 02 - 08:36 PM G'day EBarnacle, Errrr.... Robinson? If you are after songs of Harry Robertson, this recent thread covers the territory: Harry Robertson Song Book (click) I have Harry's original LP and the accompanying songbook (and the new CD) ... as well as a few other songs of his, occasionally published in Australian folklore journals: (possibly) Singabout, Tradition or Stringybark & Greenhide. The current champions of Harry's work are Lyn and Evan Mathieson who pushed the CD through the National Library and are trying to get more onto another CD. They are travelling about, but can be cobntacted via e-mail, if that is what you are after. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: EBarnacle1 Date: 26 Aug 02 - 01:56 PM Thank you, Bob. Now can you find a source for Robinson's songs? I have been trying to get the lyrics for several of his songs so I can understand and sing them. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Aug 02 - 12:50 AM Er ... G'day again, I overlooked searching on the web for "Ted Egan" - and guess what? ... Ted now has registered his own domain. Unfortunately - we still don't have a lyrics site! Regard(les)s, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Aug 02 - 12:07 AM G'day yet again Lyn, Well, I remembered how to do a "Blue Clicky", anyway! There is no general web site apparent for Ted ... but there is an ordering site for his recordings, including a CD Single of Sayonara Nakamura at Aust$10. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 26 Aug 02 - 12:01 AM G'day again Lyn, I found the site for the Drover's Boy film project ... unfortunately, not a general site for Ted Egan! Check it out anyway, there may be links I have missed. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 25 Aug 02 - 11:52 PM G'day Lyn Nielsen, If it is only the lyrics you need ... they are given in rich-joy's initial post at the top of this thread. There is a Ted Egan site somewhere - but I have it bookmarked at home, not on this work machine. I did post it a year or two back, in a thread about Ted's efforts to get a film made based on his song The Drover's Boy. You could do a 1- or 2-year search for "Drover's Boy" (OK ... so could I!). I don't remember any lyrics on the site ... back, then, anyway. I'll see what there is. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: GUEST,Lyn Nielsen Date: 25 Aug 02 - 05:40 AM I am trying to find the Lyrics of Sayonara. Nakamora (Ted Egan) on the net. Can you help me where to find it? It is for a friend in the U.S. Please E-Mail me on opal@hypermax.net.au |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Barbara Date: 26 Jun 02 - 01:20 AM masato, it was up and running when you went there? I keep getting this "out of date information" box on my RA player. I'll see if grabbing the latest upgrade makes it tick. I really want to hear this tune. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Art Thieme Date: 25 Jun 02 - 08:22 PM This was on a cassette of various Aussie songs I got from Jerry Rasmussen several years ago----but I lost the list of performers (if I ever had it?). Since then it has been a favorite of mine. But now I know who was singing it. Thanks so much to y'all. --------- I was in the process of trying to learn it when I had to quit things musical----so I've fond feelings for this over and above the fact that it is a great song. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Bob Bolton Date: 25 Jun 02 - 08:06 PM G'day rich-joy, Presumably, the place name, at the end of the first line of the second stanza, would be the Lacepede Shoals ... named for the French naturalist Count Lacépède, who has his name on a few bumps and indents of Australia. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: Hrothgar Date: 25 Jun 02 - 08:11 AM The first time I heard Ted sing this was at the National Folk Festival at Alice Springs in 1980. He sang the song, and had Nerys planted in the audience to sing the chorus in Japanese at the end. Tremendously effective. Come to think of it, it's a shame Nerys doesn't sing more. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Sayonara, Nakamura - Ted Egan From: masato sakurai Date: 25 Jun 02 - 08:09 AM Translation (final chorus):
So it's goodbye now, farewell
*kailenu: "kaerenu" would be better
Ted Egan's recording (sound clip & lyrics) is HERE. Here are photos of Japanese cemetery with the lyrics. ~Masato |
Subject: Lyr Add: SAYONARA, NAKAMURA (Ted Egan) From: rich-joy Date: 25 Jun 02 - 06:42 AM SAYONARA, NAKAMURA Ted Egan of Alice Springs, Central Australia When the luggers all sailed away From Roebuck Bay on that fateful day The diver on the B19 was Nakamura Not yet twenty-one From the Land of the Rising Sun His homeland was the island, Okinawa. In the deepest holes of the Lacepede sholes To fulfil the pearling master's goals Went the diver of the B19, Nakamura His quest for the lustrous pearl As strong as his love for the beautiful girl He'd wed when he returned to, Okinawa. Chorus : But it's goodbye now, farewell Say goodbye, to Okinawa For today, they'll bury you In West Australia And you will never be as one With the Land of the Rising Sun Sayonara, sayonara, Nakamura. From the west came a tropical squall Then the mercury began to fall Forty fathoms deep was, Nakamura Set sail : no time to stage For the storm began to rage And they pulled to the surface the diver, Nakamura. The agony is in his eyes An old Malay man cries For he knows the bends have got young Nakamura Helplessly they cursed As the diver's lungs near burst And he died on the deck the boy from Okinawa. Chorus ... Say goodbye now, farewell ... To the diver's cemetery in Broome Bearing gifts, all deep in gloom They walked with the body of the diver, Nakamura Headstones face the West A thousand divers lie at rest And they're joined today by the boy from, Okinawa. Chorus x 2 ... So it's goodbye now, farewell ... alternative final chorus : So it's goodbye now, farewell Sayonara Nakamura Kimi ga, nemuru chi, Nishi Australia Mo kailenu sokoku ni Itoshiki furusato Sayonara, Sayonara, Nakamura. I think, from memory, that the final alternative chorus may have been written by Nerys Evans, Ted's lovely wife ... This song never fails to move me to tears - either hearing it or trying to sing it ... Also, being an ex-diver (hobby), one can have a slight understanding of what kind of a death it was to die. The memory of the Diver's Cemetery in Broome lingers a long time too ... Just one of many fine songs from the pen and heart of Ted Egan. RJB |
