If you haven't seen Greed, by all means rent it. It's available on video - one of the true masterpieces, a silent film from 1927 (or '28?), based on Frank Norris's novel "McTeague." When it was recommended to me, I wasn't sure if I'd really be affected by a serious, full-length silent movie, but was I ever! My choice of Steamboat Bill Jr. might seem odd, but I think it's one of the greatest comedies ever - my personal favorite. Just brilliant from every angle. Buster Keaton at his best. So, why not put a straight-out comedy on the list, eh? Chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: BS:Sight and Sound Top 10 Critics Films From: Peg Date: 12 Aug 02 - 11:10 PM I am thinking Singin' in the Rain is there because it is such a shining example of the genre of the golden age Hollywod musical; which is an important part of film history even if such films are not made any more. Such lists are always subjective and arbitrary and bound up with expectations. I remember a local art theatre doing a survey on the top 100 foreign films of all time; this was a couple of years ago. The top two films were basically the most recent foreign films any of the voters had seen or heard of: Life is Beautiful and Run, Lola, Run. I think there La Dolce Vita clocked in at around # 33 and Bergman was not even in the top ten. There ya go. Then again these were not critics or film historians, just audience members who liked to frequent that particular theatre. Still... My personal top ten are somewhat eclectic, including obscure or silly things like Picnic at Hanging Rock and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. But as maybe one of the only professional film critics on Mudcat (a dubious occupation) I offer my top ten list of favorite films also taking into consideration their lasting value and importance:
1. La Dolce Vita (Fellini) (if I did not include the director's name it means I do not remember it at the moment!)

Not sure I think either of the Godfathers or 2001 should be on there. Just saw an excellent one the other day....The Emperor and the Assassin. Breathtaking in its sets, costuming, acting, and direction. Fictional, but based on the myths about Ying Zheng, the Chinese emperor famous for the archealogical find of all those terra cotta soldiers in his tomb. You can read more about it here. Here is a non-fiction account of the First Emperor of China, Yingzheng, aka Qin Shi Huang. Excellent movie; highly recommended. kat |

Date: 12 Aug 02 - 01:19 PM Knowing all the film fans around here, the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound has just released what I would call the real list of top 10 films, its 10 year survey of the critics (last done in 1992). This time, the Critics' top 10 (the site is www.bfi.org): 1.Citizen Kane (Welles) 1941 [No surprise here!] 2. Vertigo (Hitchcock) 1958 [Vertigo keeps getting higher on people's lists, and it certainly gets my vote.] 3. La Regle du Jeu (Renoir) 1939 4. The Godfather I and II (Coppola) 1972, 1974 5. Tokyo Story (Ozu) 1953 6. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick) 1968 7. Sunrise (Murnau) 1927 8. Battleship Potemkin (Eisenstein) 1925 9. 8 1/2 (Fellini) 1963 10. Singin' in the Rain (Kelly, Donen) 1951 Anyone ever seen "Sunrise?". I would certainly disagree with 2001 being this high on my list -- influence of Kubrick's death, possibly? And I have always thought that "Singing in the Rain" was highly overrated. I would put Les Enfants du Paradis number 2 or 3 on my list. Also Ikuru or the Seven Samurai from Kurosawa. But otherwise, not a bad list. The Director's list of Top 10 is somewhat different -- Dr. Strangelove is number 5 or 6, and Lawrence of Arabia number 4. yours, Peter T. |
