P.S. – By the way, who did win the raffle for the Martin? I didn't get a phone call from PSA, so it couldn't have been me (skunked again!).

Thanks for the kind words, Dharmabum (and yes, my cold is in its final stages now!). It was a pleasure meeting you as well. I haven't gotten my father's guitar out of the closet to look at the model number yet, but I'll get to it sometime this week and contact you about it.

I attended the Fest on Sunday afternoon only (I skipped the evening show in the interests of trying to shake this cold). The music was enjoyable but, as mentioned previously in this thread, folk music was under-represented there! I agree entirely with "Janice in NJ" 's review of Full Frontal Folk; I was wincing in pain at some of their unharmonious harmonies. Finest Kind was great, and of course Frank Malley with his terrific repertoire was singing the folkiest folk I heard that day. John Flynn surprised me by performing some traditional songs I'd never heard him do before. Robin & Linda Williams did indeed have a "fine group" and put on a slick, polished performance (Robin got a bit verbose with his introductions to songs, though – I'd rather hear the song than hear the long story behind it!).

I have to disagree with Janice's assessment of Da Vinci's Notebook; their humor was too over-the-top for me (my feeling is that if you're going to put on a funny performance, be funny, but don't get in my face and try to tell me you're funny... ya know what I mean?). Heard the last couple of songs of the Dave Carter tribute, enough to convince me that I'd like to hear more of his music, and saw a lot of grieving faces in the audience so a lot of people were indeed moved by the experience.

Was it all worth $35 for one afternoon (plus the price-gouging at the food booths)? I dunno, I suppose so, but I came away feeling less than sated musically. I also came away coughing heavily because I exited the Fest grounds through the craft area (a new option this year) and there was a craftswoman demonstrating her "magic wands" – ornate bubble-blowing wands – making so many bubbles that the air was heavy with detergent and I couldn't breathe!!

I bought 3 raffle tickets for the Martin, but I guess lightning wasn't meant to strike twice.

Still grinning about the Taylor though!

The Tuvans were fantastic, but I have nothing to measure them by. Are they run-of-the-mill throat singers or the best Tuva has to offer?

Da Vinci's Notebook made be fall to the ground laughing again and again. As far as Full Frontal Folk goes, they have a lot of growing up to do. Their harmonies were OK, but nowhere close to Finest Kind', or even to Da Vinci's Notebook for that matter. So they used the gimmick of in-you-face sexuality, and I'm sure they had all the pubescent boys drooling. But given the choice, I would rather spend the night with Anne Downey (of FK) than with any of the Frontals, singing or whatever. Now that Jacobs-Strain kid, he's cute. Kind of makes me want to rob the cradle.

Just got home.Tons of unpacking to do.
As usual, I stayed up way too late every night, singing around the campfire.
And let's face it,it wouldn't be the Philly Folk Fest without some kind of rainstorm! I knew we'd break that 8 week drought record!

Got the chance to meet Mudcatter Sharon A. on Sunday & spent the afternoon listening to the Flatlanders & Marty (this is folk?)Stuart. Hope your cold is better Sharon. It was a pleasure meeting you.

Highlights for me, Guitar player extraordinaire Tommy Emmanuel,19 year old bluesman David Jacobs-Strain,John Lily,Don Edwards, the Tuva throat singers,ya gotta see'em to believe it!,The Dave Carter tribute was truly a moving experience, Roger McGuinn,The Greenbriar Boys,Lunasa,Shamekia Copeland(her daddy Jonny Clyde would be proud),The Flatlanders(Jimmie Dale Gilmore,Joe Ely,Butch Hancock),Robin & Linda Williams,The Nashville Bluegrass Band. & Richard Thompson singing 52 Vincent Black Lightning.

What can I say?
Mud,Music,& Funnelcake...Life don't get no better'n that.

Later,DB.

So, who went?

I thought Saturday was great, except for the storm in the evening.

Tracey Grammer and the Kennedy's was very moving. Very well done, a nice tribute to Carter's music in a very postive and affirming way. I was very impressed and touched.

How about Roger McGuinn? I realized that this was the first time I've seen him and I thought he was terrific.

Also loved Full Frontal Folk, Da Vinci's Notebook and John Flynn. Wish I could have stayed the whole weekend.

Ron

Yeah, the line-up sure sounds great. What a lousy time for me to come down with a head cold! That should make me even easier to recognize: I'll be the one blowing my nose...

Thanks Janice, it was a great show musically. This was the first year the folks at Lincoln Center asked WFDU to participate and we all had a ball! Now I know how Gene Shay feels standing in front of such a large crowd, I loved it! I really loved the Greenbriar Boys! After introducing them I started walking off stage and the thought hit me - my God, I just introduced the Greenbriar Boys at Lincoln Center! For me it was one of those moments that really hit home- I never thought I would have a chance to stand on a stage and introduce such an historic group. Doc Watson, Liam Clancy & Robbie O'Connell, and the Greenbriar Boys. What a great night of music it was!

I'm really excited about Philly this year, what a superb lineup they put together! In addition to my desire to see the Greenbriar Boys again, I'm really looking forward to Roger McGuinn and Lunasa. I wish I could be there Friday too!

See you there!

Ron

Ron Olesko is too modest. He not only heard the Greenbriar Boys at Lincoln Center -- he was the MC as well. For Doc Watson, too. Great show, Ron!

Dharmabum: "Tall guy with the glasses & beard" doesn't narrow it down much, either! *BG* (I'm 5'3", so just about everybody is "tall" to me!) But I'll look for the wide-brimmed hat with Mudcat patch on it, and possibly the Mudcat shirt.

I will wear a blue-on-blue tie-dye shirt with a silkscreened logo of a green alligator in a white shirt and red tie, playing a keyboard. It says "Jambalaya Jam 1995" in red letters but it's hard to read; the alligator is easier to see on the shirt. I'll also wear a purple baseball-style hat (I've never planned my wardrobe for a fest before!). Oh, yes, another thing to look for is that I walk with a bronze-colored metal cane. Hope to see you on Sunday at 2pm!

"...there are aspects of PFF that hardly qualify as a "Folk" festival..." I agree, Dharmabum. I feel the same way about radio station WXPN's folk show on Sunday afternoons/evenings (which is hosted by PFF emcee Gene Shay).

I'll be the short, fat lady with the long brown hair and glasses – that doesn't narrow it down much, does it?!? I don't have a Mudcat patch, so I'll look through my wardrobe and see if there's an easily identifiable T-shirt or outfit I can wear, so you can spot me!

I did the heavy camping thing years ago, whole different world up there, but kinda cool.

I'll be camped along the edge of Bob BLVD. Just look for the big multi colored tie dyed banner with DHARMABUMZ printed on it. Stop by & sing a tune or two with us.

Sharon, maybe we'll bump into each other. I'll be wearing my wide brimmed hat with the Mudcat patch on it.

I know that there are aspects of PFF that hardly qualify as a "Folk" festival, but after 22 consecutive years of attending,I still have a heluva good time there.

I'll be heading out thursday morning. I am renting an RV this year. My first time at heavy camping. I will still be getting together with my friends at their campsites and we'll be singing our hearts out there. Nothing like it!

Yep! I usually go just for a day, sometimes two days, but I have yet to camp there for the weekend. I know I'm missing a LOT of good music at the campground (quite possibly the best part of the festival!), but with my health problems the camping part just seems kinda risky to be enjoyable for me. As it is, I try to pick the day I attend the fest based on the weather (the least oppressively humid day) and not the performers, and if the whole weekend is forecasted to be brutally muggy I skip the fest altogether!

The way things are looking now, Sunday is supposed to be mild and not humid, so I'll most likely be there then.
