Subject: RE: Help: Anyone from Seattle?? From: GUEST,Genie (too tired from chanty singing to log Date: 25 Sep 02 - 06:13 AM Hi, jim! Liland, Don Firth, Stewart, and a few others (John Ross, I think?) are Mudcatters from the greater Seattle area, and I visit Seattle every month and attend the Sunday evening SFS song circles in addition to participating in bluegrass jams on the 2nd and 4th Sundays when I am in town. If you PM me, I can give you more details about these and other music happenings in Seattle. Genie

Subject: RE: Help: Anyone from Seattle?? From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Sep 02 - 05:46 AM Check out the Seattle Folklore Society page, and also Victory Music. Lots of good info there to start. And if you're a guitarist of any stripe, try to find a way to attend the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop (be sure to follow the link to biographies of the teachers) -- absolutely the best fun on six strings! (or twelve, or four, or eight, or five...) Enjoy! Aloha, Mark (ex-Seattleite--could you tell?) |

Subject: RE: Help: Anyone from Seattle?? From: mousethief Date: 24 Sep 02 - 04:35 AM Welcome to God's country, Jim! If you're from California, don't tell anyone. Your secret is safe with me. I'm from the area (I currently live in Sumner, which is down by Puyallup -- look for Tacoma on the map, and then slide your finger east). There is a lot of wonderful folk music in this area -- the seattle folklife society is a good place to start (see their website -- search on google for "seattle folklife society"). There is a place in Fremont (a Seattle neighborhood) that has a weekly open mic, as well as the Antique Sandwich down in Ruston (on the tip of Tacoma close to the zoo) which also has a weekly open mic (sponsored by Victory Music). I'm just certain there is an open mic in Olympia, which is far more bohemian than either Seattle or Tacoma, but I'm not familiar with the scene down there. There is a song circle that meets in a Quaker meeting house in Tacoma that I've been to (once); if that's your sort of thing (they use RUS of course) I highly recommend it -- pretty good singing (too far away and too late at night for me, alas!). I'm sure there must be one in Seattle too but I'm not at all sure where -- again I think this might show up on the Seattle Folklife Society's webpage. And then there are smaller venues, like the Acoustic Cafe right here in little ol' Sumner, which has open mics several nights a week. Lots of wonderful music here -- it's not all grunge and post-metal-industrial-bleck! Alex |

Subject: RE: Help: Anyone from Seattle?? From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 24 Sep 02 - 04:04 AM Jim I live in the UK but my son lives in Seattle (we attended his wedding there last October). He isn't a musician so that's no help to you. However, we are probably going over for a visit next June by which time you will be well established in the Seattle scene and can show me around - I look forward to meeting up with you. Roger |

Subject: Anyone from Seattle?? From: jim100_1 Date: 24 Sep 02 - 04:00 AM Hello everybody. It's good to be able to write to this thread and interact with everybody here. I have already introduced myself and told you I was a new member, but now I'm going to go a step further. I'm wondering if there are any people on Mudcat who live here in the actual Seattle area. I'd love to interact and correspond with you guys in order to begin learning about places to go listen to folk music or perhaps gatherings related to music where I can either take part in or just go and enjoy. Like I said, I have just moved to the Seattle area a little over two months ago and totally feel like a stranger to the town. Perhaps through Mudcat, I can meet folks around the Seattle with common musical interests. Of course, I am not limiting correspondence here on Mudcat to people from the Seattle area only. I'd love to hear from anyone. Like I said, I am also learning to play the guitar, and I would definitely enjoy corresponding with other guitar players (advanced or beginners) and share knowledge and ideas and music. Well, I look forward to hearing from folks and interacting with the forums and people who write to them. I was reading some of the threads and found I can actually relate or understand how some folks feel on some of those threads. Take care, and I'll talk to all of you very soon. Jim |
