Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Teribus Date: 01 Oct 02 - 04:35 AM Hi Ard Mhacha, What you say is becoming a bit of a tradition without which the competition just wouldn't be same: Eamonn Darcy in 1987; Ronan Rafferty & Christy O'Conner Jnr., in 1989; And of course Philip Walton. Love seeing it - keep it up. Cheers. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: ard mhacha Date: 30 Sep 02 - 04:05 PM Teribus, Lee Westwood came back from the dead and did well in the doubles, but like McGinley he was having a bloody awful run pre the RYDER cUP, but once again it was left to the Paddy to bring home the bacon. Almost exciting as the All-Ireland Final, what a finish. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Teribus Date: 30 Sep 02 - 08:12 AM Just thought of another, that I believe is unique to golf. With respect to the Ryder Cup - it's like a session. The twelve best players from both sides of the Atlantic turn up to play for the entertainment of the crowd - and don't receive a penny for it. Oh Ard Mhacha, don't be too hard on Lee Westwood - the only Englishman in the European side - going into the final days play both sides were level at eight points apiece - Lee Westwood played his part in winning three of those eight points. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Steve Latimer Date: 30 Sep 02 - 07:59 AM Teribus, Very well put. Also, both are a lot more difficult to do well than they appear and a good golf swing is based on rhythm, timing and tempo. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Teribus Date: 30 Sep 02 - 06:00 AM Similarities between golf and music
1. You can play as an individual or as a team member
2. It is universal, played throughout the world
3. It can be played by young and old alike
4. Irrespective of accomplishment you can play in any company and be afforded the courtesy that will allow you to perfom
5. Playing with those more accomplished than yourself improves your performance
6. Extremely social irrespective of class, colour or creed Another of its great advantages for its amateur ranks at least - you can play the same courses as the "greats". Very few amateur footballers or cricketers ever get the chance to play the likes of Wembley or Lords. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Sep 02 - 07:42 PM Similarities between golf and music? Well, you have to work hard and paractice hard in order to be able to do it well; and yoy gte people with very different levels of skill who enjoy playing it. That goes for all sports.
But as sports go, I'd have thought golf has less in common with music-playing than most. But it'd be interesting to hear an alternatue view. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Steve Latimer Date: 29 Sep 02 - 07:19 PM There's nothing wrong with golf. Actually, there are many similarities between golf and music. Congratulations to the European Ryder Cup team!! |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: ard mhacha Date: 29 Sep 02 - 02:48 PM The Ryder Cup has just finished with a great victory for Europe, strange that there was not an English winner in the singles, not another game taking over by those dammed foreigners. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: mack/misophist Date: 29 Sep 02 - 02:09 PM Mary, queen of Scot's husband was a golfer. When she outlawed it, she's supposed to have said."It's a sin and a shame for a full grown man to spend his days chasing a sil;y little feather stuffed ball about the leas and braes". As Shakespear said: "Right On!". |

Subject: RE: BS: The English invented Golf! From: Don Firth Date: 29 Sep 02 - 01:50 PM Word is that the Irish introduced the Scots to the bagpipe, telling them that it's a musical instrument. Subject: The English invented Golf! From: GUEST,sorefingers Date: 29 Sep 02 - 11:33 AM ... to make the Scots lean over. To make the operation easier they English encouraged wearing appropriate dress. There's more to Golf than you ever thought! Final arrangements no longer employed - loud music to announce to the Lairds that the rut is on - still popular on high castle walls and done purely for tourism, Bagpipes at full volume. |
