Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: Big Tim Date: 04 Nov 02 - 02:56 AM But not Radcliffe Hall! I see Sonia O'Sullivan ran 2:32:08 in NY yesterday, finished 12th, says she may never do another. |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: Skipper Jack Date: 16 Oct 02 - 04:25 PM We've had "Radcliffe Highway" for years we've sung about it in our folk songs!! Or was that "Ratliffe Highway"?? Well done Paula. An inspiration to all athletes - particularly long distance runners. |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: Big Tim Date: 16 Oct 02 - 06:27 AM Radcliffe Highway: excellent! I hope it comes to pass. It will be interesting to see what Sonia O'Sullivan does over the 26.2 miles, won't threaten Paula's time, might run 2:20 or "blow up" and run "only" around 2:28 - time will tell). |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: Big Tim Date: 15 Oct 02 - 10:03 AM I haven't heard of any leg-break and I've followed Paula's career quite closely (through the columns of "Athletics Weekly" magazine) since she was 18, ten years ago. She's just a delight: and a straight "A" student too (4 "A" grade A Levels and a first at Loughborough); that girl has clearly shown how to maximise potential, yes, a perfect role model. (And to round it all off she married an Irishman!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: wilco Date: 14 Oct 02 - 05:45 PM While eating breakfast this morning, I was scanning my son's "Sport's Illustrated," and the only article that was the least bit interesting was about Paula Radcliffe. The hard-nosed, cynical sports-writers here in the USA couldn't say enough nice things about her. It's a very inspirational article. The magazine is full of the usual male adolescent, testoserone driven stuff about american football, the US baseball world series, the opening of the new professional hockey season, etc. And the real story is about this phenomenol athlete, slight and unassuming, who is a superb role model. I hope they give her the cover next week. She deserves it. What a great story!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: Mr Red Date: 14 Oct 02 - 05:37 PM Can anyone confirm what I thought I read - that she had a leg break(s) in her teens before she got going. I was sure I read it on a poster featuring her and designed to inspire young girls. So what was I doing at night in a girls boarding school? Playing badminton at for the local club that's what! |

Subject: RE: BS: Paula's Women's World Marathon Record From: alanabit Date: 14 Oct 02 - 05:11 PM Quite right. The trouble is, it is so unBritish to go around winning things. Had she tripped over a dead cat and twisted her ankle in the last mile, then limped home in say seventh place after being overtaken by muscular East Europeans and Americans, she would have won the hearts and minds of the British public forever as a true heroic failure. All this winning...quite unBritish you know... |
