Subject: RE: Irish Tune in St Columba Hymn Tune? From: GUEST Date: 14 Oct 02 - 05:29 PM OK, I'm thoroughly confused. In the Cyberhymnal, the St. Columba tune is given as "Dominus regit me." I went to Google, and found a midi that seems different from all of those you give. Christial Classics Etherial Hymnary John Bacchus Dykes, 1868. Dominus regit me Just a curious bystander, interested in the supposedly Irish tune. The following probably all known to you, but new to me. Also found one you gave, "The King of love..." Henry Williams Baker 1868, Dominus regit me, St. Columba at St Col-Dominus Baker's hymn, St Columba, "an Irish melody," midi and words at King of Love Mention is made here of an alternate tune by Dykes Baker-Dykes alternates Another midi at King of Love Dominus (new words) Used at Diana's funeral- Dykes version (Anglican hymn 546; Hymns Ancient and Modern, revised, no. 197. Also a St. Columba by Herbert Steven Irons, 1861; midi not given, ccel.org, CCEH. No one seems to name the "Irish tune." |

Subject: Irish Tune in St Columba Hymn Tune? From: wysiwyg Date: 14 Oct 02 - 04:34 PM We sang a lovely piece in church yesterday, to the tune "St. Columba." It's said to be an ancient Irish melody--- what? Here's a link to a MIDI for the tune in the Cyberhymnal: AS NOW THE SUN'S DECLINING RAYS. Here's a previous discussion about the similarity some people hear with the tune named "Resignation," Hymn tune - Resignation. ~Susan |
