Sam has 8.xx so that covers most people. He is not at the cutting edge. My tame Macnut is bemaoning OS X being Unix=like - something about speed.

Mac will open any PDF files, they don't have to be created especially for mac, if that is what you are concerned about--it might be worth burning a few files onto a CD in each of your format options and then trying to open them on a Mac--Many, if not most Macs with system 8.1 and up have programs bundled with the operating system that can read PC files--

Been there done that - unfortunately I bought into Java and it looks mighty pretty so I can't go back easily. Solution PCwise is to provide the Acrobat. I just thought the same wheeze works on Macs - and it looks possible. The Ultimate trick is the dual partition CD but that is proving difficult - or expensive anyway. The problem is if it is intended for a larger market I have to cover the shortcomings of the myriad possibilities and still look like a professional result.

You don't need to worry about being compatible with his OS, just about being compatible with the version of Acrobat that he is running--

He is a Luddite - er make that satisfied with what e go and while it werks e aint changing. Not sure of his OS but Acrobat 3 he has and it is quite common still. I have a local Macnut who has gone to ground - I only found recently the reason and it probably means he is not available to help but he would - at a price. Thanks for the info.
If I was working I would just pay the money, but this is more cerebrally engaging.

Mac OS six is back there with DOS 2.6, mate. Any active Mac user today is likely to be using Mac OS 8.x at a minimum, more likely to be using 9.x. There is a marked population who have not made the migration to 10.x because it is a fundamentally different OSarchitecture (UNIX based) and a much bigger change to a user. Even with a fairly old Mac you can run OS 8.x -- depends on HOW old, of course. IF he is still driving an old 80086 machine like a Classic or a II before the advent of PPC chipsets, he may have stuck back at 6.x but if so he's a rara avis indeed.

My copy of Nero will burn a HFS partition and dual partition CD's but I still need a Mac user to set up the original on a scsi - may be a ZIP as it looks like a SCSI PCwise.
I have located a software package to do it all on PC at $195 - I was hoping to do it for a lot less - the $39 is a cut-down version with txt files effectively giving the game away that you are flouting their terms of use.
As I will only be doing the one (or maybe two) I may commission a Mac shop to do most of it.
The whole idea of using a resident Acrobat is to obviate the users of legacy systems who will/cannot upgrade. I have drawn the line under Win9X so Win 3.11 is out of the frame - not a big deal but the Mac OS numbers are not as familiar - how common is os6 these days for instance? Sam from Somersfolklife.org.uk is a case in point - limited memory/disk and an old system that works and may fall over if pushed - so no upgrades. He can't (Acro3) read my hyperlnked files - just the first one.

I've used Toast on my Mac to make dual platform CDs. but the only time I installed the PC verion on my beige box it did serious damage to the Win2K OS - it's a very buggy programme on the PC.

As far as the source PDF files, most Macs will see and read them without a hassle, especially if they are running OS Ver 9 or 10. So it might simplify your project to just put a REAME file in there with a hyperlink to Adobe's site for Mac users to download the later Reader if they do not have v 4 or later.

Roxio's Toast enables data CDs to be burned that are Universally compatible (i.e., Mac OR Wintel) in a single operation.

The aim is to make a CDROM with resident Acrobats 4 running PDF's on CD to avoid the Acrobat 3 (or none) that users might prefer to keep on their own system.
I have the PC version with autorun and single click.
The next phase is to understand the Mac version of same. I have a bit of the jargon like Macscript and forks and aliases and probably will go for the the twin partition (ISO and HFS) to save hassle. I have a folkie Macnut on the case who likes a challenge but I only bump into him about once a month.

Now, has any catter tried this kind of thing and what are the pitfalls? Any thing I would prefer to know first?

The 10 PDF files are an admixture including my songs and collected stuff with video of a song I asked about here (ooer) and a true tale of a NZ folk hero - a dog. Good folkie fare.
