Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Feb 03 - 07:40 AM Thanks, John - I'd have missed it if I hadn't seen that. It was a good one, all about the Lambeg Drumming tradition, but looking at it technically and musically. And bringing out the truth about how superficial and petty and, please God transient, are the antagonisms in Northern Ireland. Old men remisiscing about a time when the same drummers playing the same tunes might at times take part in marches of the Orange Order and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Some day there'll be marching bands from both traditions taking part in the same festivals. Some day. |

Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Jan 03 - 04:40 AM You shuld send him here to Milton Keynes, Sarah! We have a 20-odd-year-old cable system that can't cope with broadband, DAB or anything clever like that, and very poor off-air tv signals (no Channel 5 at all: s oit's not alllabd news!) with no chance of a digital box working, and too far from BT's exchange for ADSL. If that wasn't bad enough, we have further to go than anwhere else in the UK to get to a library! (Not that you can see BBC4 in a library ..) Steve |

Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: Sarah the flute Date: 23 Jan 03 - 03:45 AM Ah if only getting digital were as simple as stumping up the money. My husband is a technophobe and I've only just succeeded in persuading him to upgrade the old dial telephone to one of these new push button modern things..... and that was only because BT said he couldn't have the old one any more and they'd install the new connection for free. Hours of intensive tuition have followed .... AND wait for this... we have to have a phone with a cord because he can't cope with ones you carry around! What hope digital TV????!!!! Sarah |

Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: Ralphie Date: 22 Jan 03 - 03:57 PM As I've said on many other threads regarding BBC4...They really do appreciate feedback (Particularly positive...Don't we all, after all!!) They are trying to do something, and yes, I know that the lack of complete UK Transmitter coverage is incredibly frustrating, but the more plaudits thrown at the network, even if you can't get it, can only help. They are operating on a financial shoestring at the moment, but at least they're trying. Yes, we'd all love this stuff on the mainstream channels, and, with a huge effort maybe something will change....(Sound of old man choking to death!) Oh, and apparently, anyone with an old "On Digital" box (with or without monkey!) should be able to get BBC4, for no extra cost. See you next time Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: clansfolk Date: 22 Jan 03 - 01:48 PM Digital set top boxes only cost about £80 and give you extra channels including radio channels (so I'm told) as a one off payment must be better value than a TV license (trouble is you need a license as well!!) - still time to get one before Friday!!!!! I'm ok - have cable..... |

Subject: RE: Folk Show on UK TV, Friday 24.1.2003 From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 22 Jan 03 - 01:38 PM yes, there is some great stuff on that channel, in the last few weeks there has been concerts by Martin Carthy, Christy Moore, The Watersons, recordings of folk festivals etc, it just seems a shame that most people can't see it. |
