Problem solved. The name of the song is "My Old Cod Jigger" and the artist is Bobby Evans.

Believe it or not, I am following up on most of your suggestions.

Mary Garvey & Q, You are correct that the song can't be older than 1992, when cod jigging was banned. As tapes go, that could be considered old in a young person's eyes. ~grin~

Q, I went to Dr. Newman's site and realized from the article that Sharon Shearer would probably have no idea what the tape was that was playing in the background when she captured the teaching moment she referenced. That's too much of a longshot even for me. ~LOL~

EBarnacle, Mary Garvey's reply is valid: "Definitely not," Squid Jiggin' Ground. Check the song on the page. It's not even close to Scammel's famous work.

George, I have no access to books like that. I live on an island where a new library just started last fall. If it's not on the WWW, I have to count on others for input. Thanks, Malcolm for your excellent research. :-)

KatLaughing & Jon, I fired a missive off to Kelly Russell early this morning, but still await a reply. So far, Kelly seems to be the only hope.

Thanks, all, for your gargantuan effort. If it were easy, I wouldn't have brought it here where the Forum folk are the best. I'll definitely post back if or when we find a solution. :-)

A total longshot. At this website, a teacher, Sharon Shearer, at Pictou or near Pictou, mentions a tape of fish jigging songs. Whether the tape was commercial or private is not mentioned. Perhaps someone at Pictou might know of this teacher. Website: Teaching problems
Hope that's right- copied in my terrible henscratching. If if doesn't work, I will look for the website again.

Your best bet would be Jim Payne and Kelly Russell at Pigeon Inlet. Jim writes, but this doesn't look like one of his.

Are you sure that it's not "The Squid Jiggin' Ground?" I believe it's by Scammel.

Thanks, Malcolm. I missed Q's line about the Peacock book!

Running low on references.

I don't see any reference in Karpeles, and there seems to be none in the Roud index. Q has already eliminated Peacock.

Have you checked the Three Volume set of Songs of the Newfoundland Outports? I think Ken Peacock was the compiler of that one.

Also other references would be
Genevieve Lehr    Come and I Will Sing You
Paul Mercer's      Newfoundland Songs and Ballads in Print 1842-1974
Maud Karpeles'    Folksongs from Newfoundland

I was going to also say that it sounds fairly new..but he said someone found it on a recording..

I am honored to be on your site..one of the Ocean Ranger songs (the second one). I had friends that were back and forth on the rigs and found they were all OK. Much much later I found that someone I didn't know well, but sort of, had died. He had been bringing supplies to the rig. He owened a store in town. I guess I am digressing. Good site. Lots of good memories. mg

"Gest," looked around; it is only(?) on your very useful website. Here is your index page, for those interested in Newfoundland (and quite a bit of transplanted British Isles material) songs: Gest Newfoundland

I would guess that the song is not very old, at least from some lines (you can't jig a fish no more). Cod-jigging forbidden since 1992. It is not in Peacock, "Songs of the Newfoundland Outports."

Cod jiggers are collectable now!

A Newfoundlander found a song on an old recording tape and we are looking for the title and possibly the author if anyone has ever heard it. You can find the lyrics on this page: GEST Songs Of Newfoundland & Labrador - Cod Jigger?
Thanks for any help. :-)
