Subject: RE: BS: Simpsons salute to Canadian anthem! From: GUEST,Bardford minus cookie (doh!) Date: 21 May 03 - 07:54 PM I think the Simpsons has a few Canadian writers on staff - ergo a fair amount of Canuckery creeps into the script. A couple years back, CBC radio had a thing where you rewrite the Canadian anthem. Someone rewrote the first line: "Oh Canada, our home on native land..." |

Subject: RE: BS: Simpsons salute to Canadian anthem! From: GUEST,Marion Date: 21 May 03 - 06:55 PM No, no, NO! Here are much closer quotes (I rewound and watch that bit twice): Sideshow Mel: Let us join our hands in song. Sea Captain: Not with our warlike national anthem... Sideshow Mel: But with that sweet and soothing hymn, the national anthem of Canada! (Everyone sings an excerpt of Oh Canada, and make a maple leaf formation.) Milhouse: I guess we've learned that war is not the answer. Bart: Except to all of America's problems. (The womenfolk were in the bleachers; Lisa waved a Quebec flag, Marge a Canadian flag.) I was surprised and touched by it - I was expecting them to start making fun of Canada any second. Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Simpsons salute to Canadian anthem! From: PeteBoom Date: 21 May 03 - 12:34 PM Ah, but is was Bart's tag line that wrapped the whole thing - I think it was Homer who said something like: "You see? Violence is definitely not the American way." Bart: "Unless its in our best national interest." And to think I caught the last bit as I came home from pipe band practice. Timing is everything... Subject: BS: Simpsons salute to Canadian anthem! From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 03 - 06:49 PM Did anyone else see the first of the two-episode season finale of the Simpsons this past weekend? It was called the Bart of War. Bart and Milhouse were pitted against another youth club doing good works. It quickly escalated into all kinds of pranks, etc. What was really fun and kewl, imo, was at the end. I think it was Lisa who piped up, the little liberal, bless her heart, and suggested the entire town sing Canada's anthem because it was NOT about war, etc. It brought to mind the discussions we've had here about that same issue. Made me laugh and tip my hat to Matt Groening for his pacifist message. Anyhow, their singing sounded great and I liked their choice of anthems to sing! And, YES, I know it's just a stupid tv show without real people, even.**bg** |
