Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: yrlancslad Date: 29 Aug 03 - 09:09 PM Hi Anahata just back from a short vacation and can assure you that I play you more than "occasionally", just about every programme since I got ém in fact! Malcolm |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: Bill D Date: 19 Aug 03 - 04:16 PM I have applications that can play OGG, I just never see any...(not that I look a lot)...there are just too many options for most non-geek users to cope with. installation, conversion, stream capture, configuration, association of 'right' apps, fighting default settings, reassuring firewalls.....it all causes most users to either accept what is put in front of them, or not even try. (I just keep trying things and then extracting some explanation to myself as to why it did or didn't work....I end up being able to do most necessary things, but not exactly 'understanding' them *grin*) applications like JetAudio, Apollo, and QCD have weaned me from the MS trough. |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: treewind Date: 19 Aug 03 - 03:27 PM Yes, it's true RA is almost as bad on Windows. The older version is a free download for Linux and that just does as it's told, doesn't go popping up little messages or any nonsense like that. Of course we should all be listening to Ogg streams really, but that's too much to hope for. Many Windows players can do Ogg Vorbis now, which is at least a step in the right direction. To restore the balance in favour of free software, I have the entire contents on an album available for download from my website in that format. If you insist on MP3 you can only have six tracks... Copies of both albums are in the safe hands of Malcolm at KZSC. I'll just have to take his word for it that he's playing tracks from them occasionally! Anahata |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: Bill D Date: 19 Aug 03 - 01:04 PM Real Audio is as bad in their way as MS..it is Real Work to keep it from selling you advanced versions and making itself the default player and running ads on top of everything...I don't know whether the Linux version has all these issues. however, in Windows, the above mentioned JetAudio WILL play Real Audio formats (including streaming)..and has better playlists and other features as well. This, of course, does nothing to help us if a station simply decides to go with WMA. (I keep thinking I ought to try Linux, now that they have begun to make installation a bit simpler, but I have SO many programs that are not compatible....maybe a dual boot system soon) |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: treewind Date: 19 Aug 03 - 12:10 PM Well the sheep don't all have to go into the MS pen. I can't play that WMA stuff on my Linux box because MS won't publish the details of the format. What's wrong with Real Audio? Anahata |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: Bill D Date: 19 Aug 03 - 11:13 AM I thought that JetAudio 'might' be able to do this, as it will handle some streaming media, but several tests failed....it seems to have a different format. There is no indication from the station, or in Media player what the format is. Just "Windows Media" MS is trying to herd all the sheep into one pen, it seems. |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: yrlancslad Date: 19 Aug 03 - 10:55 AM Hi Mr Misophist, as a technological dwarf I don't know the answer to your Q. but if you go to the website it may help you. I have a feeling you're stuck with Media Player though. Sorry Malcolm ( your Lancashire Lad ) |

Subject: RE: KZSC streaming again From: mack/misophist Date: 19 Aug 03 - 12:23 AM Will something other than Media Player work? After all, it's better to kill yourself than use Media Player. Or the same. |

Subject: KZSC streaming again From: yrlancslad Date: 17 Aug 03 - 05:47 PM Kzsc is back on stream! Go to kzsc.ucsc.edu for instructions on how to pick us up via Media player. Try the Northern Bridge, 3-6pm California time, every Monday afternoon, for folk music and song from the British Isles and Ireland, including some artists you won't hear anywhere else this side of the Atlantic. |
