Not Bonnie. I meant Ralphie. Sorry - that came from once working with a woman called Bonnie Ralph.

I see Joe's in here, so this might be the place to moan about inconsistencies in deciding what is allowed above the line and what gets pushed below. For instance all obits seem to go above, regardless, whereas a thread celebrating the arrival at Mudcat of Serious Kitchen's seriously fine piper goe below.

John, I had wondered whether to say "pussy footing" instead of "circumspection." Sorry Bonnie, but I think it's as well I didn't.

I wasn't going to respond to this until I read J from "9"H's response to Fionn. Wonderful....Way to go John. A pleasure to read your musings, as always. (And thats a serious comment).
Mind you, is Hull part of the UK? Discuss !! On second thoughts, please don't !!
And lest our US friends are oblivious to the point. Our unelected first Family of Folk, (ie The Watersons, not the Windsors).......Have a huge connection with Hull....Mind you, none of them live there anymore LOL!

Have a good day all, especially John.

Regards Ralphie (NFH)

So at one time people are complaining that there aren't enough music threads, and they are outnumbered by the non-music threads.

And then, when the split is introduced and it demonstrates that this is in fact the reverse of the truth, and that, as always, by far the majority of the threads relate to music, what do we get? A complaint that there are too many music threads.

I'm against any further extension of the split, at any rate on the lines of the music/BS style division, though it's worked well enough for that.

Perhaps some tweaking of the prefixes might be in order. (God, that sounds bloody painful...) But I can't actually see a way that would really work, given the way threads can drift around all over the place. And trying to break things apart on a national or regional basis would risk destroying one of the most valuable aspects of the place, which is that it tears down this kind of division which threatens to blind us when we rely on a parochial mass media. (And the bigger the country, it seems, the more parochial.)

All right, it's got to a stage where it'd be pretty unfeasable for anyone to keep up with all the threads, and maybe that takes away from a certain type of community feeling. Yes, and maybe it might be getting harder for newcomers to find their feet, and if that'strue it's a real shame. But I don't think technical fixes like that are going to solve that one.

There are very few threads which stay on-topic, wether BS or not, and so to try to sub-group discussions in to smaller packages would, in my opinion, stifle the flow of information on offer.
Some of the most enlightening threads come about because of thread drift.

Call me provocative BUT.......

Why can't we have a Moaners classification where people who recognise beligerence in themselves can go and moan the shit out of like minded moaners.

Oh I get it - because it ain't like the real thing. Innit?

Some confusion here originating from (my guess) gargoyle's unfortunate choice of an expression.

The first post makes sense when you understand gargoyle's 'length of the ...' as meaning not a specific single thread (or some threads) but the number of music threads requiring scrolling before seeing them all.

So his plea is for a further subdivision of threads and not for shorter music threads. Then he proposes (tongue in cheek?) starting with a subdivision for the Hull threads. John doesn't see any humour in that remark and starts multiposting in defense of Hull (threads).
That cannot be meant seriously for it would only eliminate very few thread (between two and five) from the whole number of threads.

However, it is an idea which can be discussed without any rage. I'm against it, by the way, for I am glad with the present system. And the Hull threads? Since the onset of self-controlling the number of those threads they don't bother me anymore. I even open one of them from time to time.

Wolfgang

I have put a request in the help threads as suggested.

Modification Request (for the back burner!)

I think Mr. John from Hull may have just drunk too much coffee.

And if I didn't look at the BS threads occassionally, I would miss such gems as the postings in this thread....

"the length of this current music thread is redicuolous [sic]"
What music thread? where?
if there's a long music thread, so what, is that such a big problem?

I believe the suggestion was to have sub-areas...

in example: United Kingdom subset Hull (or Somerset ect.)

in example: United States subset Blue or American Folk

I don't believe he was trying to personally give you a weddgie Mr. John from Hull.

Hmmm...a tech threads...in the lower-regions????

How did it slip below the line?

I wondered that, too. It was moved during the time that I was posting my message above. Still, there was a lot in the thread that was just nastiness, so I decided to leave it where somebody moved it.

Hi, gargoyle - I'm not sure which thread you're talking about. Is it "Is Appalachian Folk Music= Bluegrass"? That one is at 42 messages. At 50 messages, you will note that the mumber of messages listed on the Forum Menu becomes a clickable link. If you click on the link, the thread will split into batches of 50 messages. At 50 messages, there will also be a small "d" link next to that number - if you click it, you will get the messages in descending order.
I suppose we could have made the cutoff at 37 messages, but we chose 50.
Now, if you object to having a few of the longer threads in the music section of the forum, I don't think we will be making more splits in the forum menu. More than two might get confusing.

Foolestroupe,

If you post an inquiry on the HELP forum (upper right-hand corner of this page - right under "GO") Joe or a clone may be able to provide you with a special "No BS" URL that you can bookmark.
This feature is already available to registered Mudcatters - just go to Membership and check the appropriate boxes.

The Natural Life Cycle of Mailing Lists
AUTHOR UNKNOWN

Every list seems to go through the same cycle:

1. Initial enthusiasm (people introduce themselves, and gush a lot about how wonderful it is to find kindred souls).

2. Evangelism (people moan about how few folks are posting to the list, and brainstorm recruitment strategies).

3. Growth (more and more people join, more and more lengthy threads
develop, occasional off-topic threads pop up).

4. Community (lots of threads, some more relevant than others; lots of information and advice is exchanged; experts help other experts as well as less experienced colleagues; friendships develop; people tease each other; newcomers are welcomed with generosity and patience;
everyone --- newbie and expert alike --- feels comfortable asking questions, suggesting answers, and sharing opinions).

5. Discomfort with diversity (the number of messages increases dramatically; not every thread is fascinating to every reader; people
start complaining about the signal-to-noise ratio; person 1 threatens
to quit if *other* people don't limit discussion to person 1's pet
topic; person 2 agrees with person 1; person 3 tells 1 & 2 to lighten
up; more bandwidth is wasted complaining about off-topic threads than is used for the threads themselves; everyone gets annoyed).

6a. Smug complacency and stagnation (the purists flame everyone who asks an 'old' question or responds with humor to a serious post; newbies are rebuffed; traffic drops to a doze-producing level of a few minor issues; all interesting discussions happen by private e-mail and are limited to a few participants; the purists spend lots of time self-righteously congratulating each other on keeping off-topic threads off the list).

OR

6b. Maturity (a few people quit in a huff; the rest of the participants stay near stage 4, with stage 5 popping up briefly every few months; many people wear out their second or third 'delete' key, but the list lives contentedly ever after).

I personally would like (I know people may be busy and all that - it's just a preference...) to have a selection box something similar to the optional Threads/Forum selection for the searches

which allows me to NOT have to load the BS threads unless I choose. Or load just them...

The reason?

Speed of dialup download/paying for bandwidth...

Said it before...given the length tonight.

SPLIT the THREADS

It was nice of Joe/Max?/Pene to create the BS threads in the lower section. (My blood-pressure is lower and the LaughKat and I seldom cross paths anymore)

However, the length of the current "music=thread" is rediculous!

Let us start with a UK/Hull split....and a ....

Sincerely,

Gargoyle
