Subject: RE: BS: Best Birthday From: GUEST Date: 15 Sep 03 - 06:05 PM I'm Sept 12th. One of my best was in my early 20s in the Colorado Rockies. I went hitchhiking up to Ward to go backpacking with a friend, and ran into two others also celebrating their birthdays (same day as mine) including one of them who shared my name! We all shared a few beers, a free meal on the house for our birthdays, and went our merry way the following day. Just got back from spending a week in the woods for my birthday (my favorite way to spend my bday week), and am overjoyed to have missed all the 9/11 melodrama. |

And the day after my birthday, I met someone who has since become another of my best friends. This year we were out camping at a reenactment and everyone made a great fuss over my birthday and gave me champagne. It was really swell. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Best Birthday From: Ely Date: 14 Sep 03 - 04:13 PM My birthday is the Fourth of July, which is a lousy birthday in the US because everything is either closed or mobbed, and drunk drivers are a big problem. The summer I turned eighteen I had a job in the gift shop of a water park, and, of course, attendance skyrocketed on the 4th so everyone had to work. I got the 4:00 pm-to-midnight shift with a couple of guys named Jeb and Eric. Jeb was the assistant manager, a clean-cut, athletic, churchgoing, all-American. Eric was a chain-smoking death-metal afficionado who attended an alternative high school and had been driving since the age of 12 but had never had a license; not the kind of guy you would expect to care one way or the other about holidays or birthdays. When everyone had finally cleared out of the park, around 1:30, the boss said we'd have to do a quick inventory because holidays were always big shoplifting days (because we were so busy). Everybody groaned. But when we all got back to the gift shop, instead, there was a birthday cake and a couple of cards for me. The boss told me later that she had been afraid all day long that Eric would blow their cover because he was so excited about surprising me that he could hardly stop talking about it. I thought that was very endearing; I've always been sorry I lost track of him after the summer ended. |

Subject: RE: BS: Best Birthday From: Mudlark Date: 12 Sep 03 - 02:49 PM A great story Amergin, with what sounds like a very happy ending. My birthday is 12/31. As a kid, as my folks were great partygoers, my birthday was pretty much ignored...too close to Xmas, and overshadowed by the evening's celebrations. But it got better as I started dating, and on my 21st b'day my friends gave me a fantastic New Year's Eve/B'day party as a total surprise...so that was one best b'day. 2nd best b'day I ever had...there was an unusually low tide on the 31st and my husband and I spent hours out on reef, much farther out in the ocean than I've ever been able to walk before, examining tidepools full of creatures as weird, amazing and unbelievable as anything I've ever seen in a sci-fi movie. I will never forget it. |

Subject: BS: Best Birthday From: Amergin Date: 12 Sep 03 - 12:26 AM Well, I got to thinking today about my previous birthdays...and how many stand up in my mind...and I realised that only three really stand out...two because I got very precious gifts that I adore....and one because of the tragedy that occurred two years ago....but I won't talk about that... But I do want to talk about the good two birthdays...the first one I was turning 26 that day...and was with a wonderful woman...a woman who was very dear to me...and still is...just in a different way....we're just friends now...but then I loved her and she was a bit older than me...by 17 years. I got up that morning and came downstairs to find her holding a small wrapped package and a card....she handed them to me...and I opened the card...then unwrapped the present....it was a little black leather bound book...that I could copy my poetry and songs into...I still use it...and anyone who has met me has most likely seen me sing and read my work from it....I'll keep it always...even after it is full.... The second good one was about a year ago...I was very depressed...feeling worthless and wondering what happened to my hhopes for the future...and feeling worthless...and alone...and wanted to die...to top it off it was the first anniversary of the attacks on the WTC and the pentagon... there was a lovely woman then from the Sydney area that I started chatting with and did not know very well...but I came to like very much...well on my bday she gave me a link to a website...and there it was...a birthday page created in my homour....she went into alot of trouble working hard for days creating a page for me....just to bring a smile on my face and make sure my birthday was a special one...and it was...a couple of weeks later she told me she had a crush on me...and well I liked this woman very very much and well had one on her too...and I told her....don't think I ever would have if she hadn't come clean first...well a year later we are engaged to be married...what a difference a year makes. What are some of your most precious birthdays? |
