Is this one of those places in the area of spain
which had a Celtic culture s does Asturia?
or an autonomous one such as the Basques?
Good luck and let us know what you find there!

My sister went to Compostella. It's in Galicia, and she found a music festival. I believe September is the month for them in Spain. We both love Galician bagpipes. Incidentally, there is a Galician language and it's nothing like Spanish. Not that this made much difference to my sister, the linguistic incompetent. She spent a week asking waiters for the hillside instead of the check. When she tried to ask for a white package, she got an anchovie sandwich.

Two modern day and very surreal Pilgrims travelling to the shrine. Bunuel's first film was "Un Chien Andalou" which he made with Salvador Dali. His films are not for everyone. The surrealism is sometimes so complex that is can be difficult to "get the joke." In "The Obscure Object of Desire" he used two different actresses for the same character; one for the virginal temperment, the other for the lustful.

Rent the video of Bunuel's "The Milky Way." It should give an entirely different perspective in which to consider your sojourn.

What about the University Accomodation ?

Santiago de Compostela is a great place. Loads of restaurants, bars & cafés. Loads of beautiful little streets in the centre, as well as the big shops like El Corte Inglés.

There is a lovely park in the centre too, next to the Univesity. You can get about the centre without having to get taxis & buses.

Apart from the obvious places to visit like the Cathedral, what about going to a local vineyard, where they do tours ? There are also some nice cities around which you can get to easily on nthe train. I know that's not a lot , but just being there is quite a delight.

There are a lot of places to but silver jewellery too, so you know what you will be bringing back as a souvenir !

ENJOY !

I'm off to a conference in Santiago soon, and have had difficulty arranging a hotel in spite of the citys web site and reasonably helpful information bureau. Anyone have any info about what to do and see in S de C apart from the obvious cathedral? how about music and food? Anybody have a favourite reasonably cheap (Eu < 100) accommodation ?
