The man didn't do anything wrong. He grabbed at a foul ball coming down right in front of him. He didn't see Alou trying to catch it because he's looking at the ball like he should have been. A woman at old Tiger Stadium lost an eye when she took her eyes off the ball while sitting in the stands. A foul smashed her eye socket and literally crushed her eyeball. She is now blind in that eye obviously but also suffers headaches and double vision with the eye she still has. The Tiger franchise paid her nothing because they are not obligated. Basically, she's screwed--terribly screwed.

Bartman did only what any sensible person should do: keep your eye on the ball so it doesn't come down on your head.

He didn't lose the series, the Cubs did. Kerry Wood blames himself for choking and Alou afterwards refused to badmouth Bartman. Now if the rest of Chicago would just do the same. Shut up and get over it, folks. At least you have a good ball team. Try living here in Detroit and having to watch the Tigers. Spoiled asses.

However...there's a funny side as well.

Actually, what happened to Bartman after he caught the foul ball is not only not funny, it is extremely representative of a culture of violence. I watched the game, and saw the incident. The ball didn't go straight at the fans, it looped up and was dropping down on them, so they were all looking up, and didn't see the left fielder also trying to get the ball. (The sad thing is that the fielder would have had it.) It wasn't only Bartman who was after the ball -- there were five or six others, but he got it, didn't even see the fielder.

People around him threw beer at him, screamed curses, and eventually the Cubs security team led him away, with his jacket over his head, and he was escorted from the stadium.

Next day a Chicago newspaper "outed" him, and police had to set up guards at his home, the media were all over the front lawn, media helicopters were buzzing overhead, and Bartman couldn't go to work.

He eventually wrote a public letter of apology, for something that any normal baseball fan does at a game -- catch a legal foul ball.

Disgusting.

I had to take a deep breath, I had to stop myself from dying of laughter , I had to read it again.

From the BBC today.

The Chicago Cubs - baseball team - up by 3 to zip against the Florida Marlins, were denied their victory by an excited fan. Mr Bartman seeking fame for life leaped up and grabbed a long 'out' ball therby denying his own team's fieldperson efforts to catch it.

The incident some assert put a curse on the team, and they lost the game, the Cubs lost 8-3.

The Governor has offered Steve a place on the 'witness protection program', a City Councilor has offered him funded asylum in Alaska and
to add insult to injury Mr Barman has been offered free accomdation and protection IN FLORIDA by Mr Jed Bush Governor of Florida.
