An Rógaire Dubh

Tá nead ins an sliabh ag an Rógaire Dubh (x3),
’S ní ghabhfaidh sé an bóthar ach cóngar an chnoic. (x2)

Daighdil dum, dadil dum, dídil dum, dadil dum,
Daighdil dum, dadil dum, daighdil dum dá,
Diderí-aighdil dum, dídil dum, daighdil dum dá,
Dí-adil dum, daighdil dum, daighdil dum dá. (x2)

Tá mo stoca ’s mo bhróga ag an Rógaire Dubh (x3),
’S mo naipicín póca le bliain ’s an lá inniu. (x2)

Dhá bhfeicfeása Máire taobh eile den tsruth (x3), *
Is a dhá cois in airde ag an Rógaire Dubh! (x2)

The Black Rogue

The Black Rogue has a nest in the mountain, (X3)
And he won’t go the road but by the short-cut of the hill.

The Black Rogue has my socks and my shoes, (X3)
And my pocket napkin for the past year and a day.

If you saw Máire the far side of the stream, (X3) *
And her two legs raised up by the Black Rogue!

* Dhá bhfeicfeása Máire ’s a tóin leis an sruth (x3),
If you saw Máire and her arse to the stream, (X3)

Go n-éirí leat, Antaine

[I found I had made a xerox copy, but this doesn't look like the same song. JIFSS #19, p. 8, 1922]

An Rogaire Dubh.

Cad e/ an fa/th dhuit, a stro/in-se, na/ geo/bhfa/ le No/ra,

I don't have a copy of the lyrics of the song in 'The Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society', #19, p. 8. This is listed in the Irish folk songs in journals file on my website.

In file T1 on my website are ABC's of the tune under 3 titles, "Blarney Castle", "Johnny McGill", and "Black Rogue" (in Gaelic), as well as "The Basket of Oysters", a cross of "Greensleeves" and "Black Rogue", c 1800. click for my website
