Our resident cat (of 10 1/2 years) now has it as well. Sneezes and coughs. Despite our attempts to segregate the newcomers the first day, they did sniff each other under the door. Last Saturday, we adopted 2 cats from the Toronto Humane Society. Both of them seemed very alert and healthy. By mid-afternoon one was sneezing. By midnight she was drooling heavily. By the next morning she wasn't eating or drinking. We took her to back to the Humane Society vet clinic. They admitted her with a fever of over 41 degrees, and asked us to bring in the other cat. The other cat had no symptoms - she was curious and alert and quick - but she had a fever of 40.3 degrees, so they admitted her too. By the next day, as they had predicted, she was sneezing and drooling. Both cats have spent the week so far at the vet clinic. One has been on IV, one is fed by syringe, both are on meds, both are getting blood tests, and both are very sick. It looks like one of them has improved slightly today, but the other is still very very sick. Neither will come home until completely healthy, in order to not infect our resident cat....although the sharing may have already occurred - incubation period for URI is up to 14 days, so we won't know for a while yet. Every morning the clinic phones to report the condition of the two cats. We can't go to see them because they are in the infectious cat unit. BOO HISS!!! ~black walnut |

Bruce the cat has been unable to find a new home – because he has been suffering from sneezing fits for over four months. RSPCA officers rescued the four-year-old tabby when he was abandoned in July but nobody is willing to take him in because he keeps sneezing on them. Bruce, who sneezes up to 40 times per hour, has been diagnosed as suffering from rare chronic rhinitis – which was bought on by flu and causes inflamation of the nose. Georgina Woollaston, from Barnes Hill's RSPCA animal sanctuary in Birmingham, said: 'He's a lovely cat. Some visitors have shown an interest but he starts sneezing and they take another cat home.' She has improved somewhat this morning and only sneezed twice, as opposed to 20 times yesterday by this time... But I'll continue to monitor... I'm with GUEST, KB, on seeking medical attention pre-maturely but wise enough to not let things go too far. My dad went to doctor evry time he got a cold 'er somethin' hurt fir the last 30 years of his life... That ain't me... From: AggieD Date: 04 Nov 03 - 07:47 AM I used to have a problem with one of my cats which I worked out was that every time she came back from the cattery I used, a few days later she was sneezing & snotting all over the place, yes not very pleasant is it? I worked out that it had to be the cattery & when I used another place the problem stopped, but not until after I worked through the idea that she got the infection from the cattery, & not from coming back home. But each time I did take her to the Vet & despite moaning about the price of fees etc., I could not put her health at risk. I'm sure there must be some kind of animal welfare place that will help if you can't afford the fees. Aggie |

One of mine has just had a week or so of sneezing - she had a whole load of dark brown kack (technical term for stuff that ain't wax and ain't earmites) in her ear. Kept clearing it out and she's got a lot better. Ever watched a cat lick sneeze snot off it's whiskers? LTS |

From: GUEST,KB Date: 04 Nov 03 - 05:40 AM One of our cats had the sneezies - she was definitely lethargic and under the weather and was sneezing a lot for about a week, stinky snot flying everywhere, and I think a bit of a temperature. I decided that, since she was still eating & drinking OK, I'd let her try to fight it off herself. For about a week I took her to bed with me every night to keep her warm & cuddled. She fought off the infection with no problems. I did a lot of reading up on the internet & came to the conclusion that "wait & see" was the best policy (it could just be a grass seed up the nose). In general, both for pets and for family, I prefer to try to let things take their course rather than intervening with antibiotics etc. If she had stopped eating, peeing & shitting then I'd have taken her to the vet. If it runs into weeks then its probably worth going to the vet in case its a chronic thing that is going to need ongoing treatment. |

I've had a couple of cats who have ended up with kidney disease and the symptoms often started with something that looked similar to the flu. The first one I had with kidney disease I didn't take him to the vet as soon as I should, thinking that it was just a cold or something but he died soon after. So, the vet is the best bet!! (Ta-da! From: katlaughing Date: 04 Nov 03 - 01:34 AM If it is upper respiratory, be sure to get treatment and clean the food and water dishes daily with a diluted solution of bleach. This will help to keep it from spreading to others or from reinfecting. I wound up with 6 of them getting it, but not at the same time...a couple one week, two more the next, like kids with chicken pox(!), so that I finally had to make a meds chart just so I could keep it straight who'd had their shots/pills and how often, etc.! It could just be a bit of catnip or something dry and dusty caught up the nose, but if it's gone on for 3 days, even that needs to be checked. Out here they were warning about foxtail seeds getting up the nose, in the ears, ingested or burrowing under the skin this summer. That can cause very serious problems. I've got one cat who has an auto-immune disorder which makes her mouth very red and sore from time to time. Eating irritates the back of her throat and sinuses which makes her sneeze after every meal, even when she's had meds to alleviate the mouth thing. I've been dealing with a cat with allergies and a chronic sinus infection, and sneezing is his main symptom. Why take chances? Just had mine back to the vet again today.
