Subject: RE: New Age/Folk Pianist From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 25 Nov 03 - 04:45 PM Les.B I like Phiip Aarberg, although I'm having trouble getting in to his " Live from Montana" album. For any casual listeners, Winston's " December" is a good place to start with lots of seasonal stuff -and Pachelbel's Canon! But this IS a interesting version. |

Subject: RE: New Age/Folk Pianist From: Wesley S Date: 25 Nov 03 - 04:25 PM I think George became popular because no one else was recording anything like it at the time and it filled a niche. He's become an easy target since then. But if someone is recrding music that people enjoy I don't see what the problem is. I don't care for Celine Dion but if people want to buy her music thats fine with me. Two things I would compliment George on. He makes space available at each of his concerts for a local food bank to promote themselves and collect food. And he makes available a list of musical artists that were his influences over the years. He tells people { from the stage } that if you like this number you really need to check out Professor Longhair. Or other related artists. Concertwise he's also known to throw in a few musical suprises like slack-key guitar pieces or a few celtic or jewish harmonica solos. And he's a nice guy. |

Subject: RE: New Age/Folk Pianist From: GUEST,Les B. Date: 25 Nov 03 - 04:17 PM So what do you think of Philip Aaberg? He's played our theater several times, as has Winston. Aaberg has appeared with Tim O'Brien and other bluegrassers as the "Grange" band. |

Subject: New Age/Folk Piano Players From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 25 Nov 03 - 02:59 PM I'm a fan of certain -so-called- new age pianists. George Winston is probably the most well-known and he has recorded tunes by a number of folk artists including Pete Seeger and John Fahey. Has anyone out there got anything to say on the subject? p.s. George does a great version of " Carol of the Bells", which is the subject of a current thread. |
