If Snuffy has the same recording that I have (on a CD of music hall songs called "Music Hall Memories"), it was Lily Morris. (Castling, 7 June 1929. Unpublished).

If I've transcribed the words correctly they're as follows:


I'm slavey at a small hotel they call the Travellers Rest
I like the missus very well but I like the master best

I have a recording of it at home sung by an old music hall artiste (Florence Desmonde?) but I won't be home till Sunday evening.

If no-one's done it by then, I'll have a go. From memory the first verse goes ..

"Why" by Anthony Newley entered the British charts in January 1960 and got to No1.

There was a song that made it to the charts in about 1960 - I think it was sung by Anthony Newley - called "Why". I gather that it was made as a spoof and surprisingly became a hit. Was it a parody of that ?

Google informs me that the subject line appears largely in hymns and inspirational literature. That perhaps adds a touch of blasphemy to the bawdry in the song of that title that is sung in a pub by the heroine's mother in the movie version of _A Taste of Honey_ by Shelagh Delany (1961). Unfortunately, I can make out the words to only a few lines:

Why does he follow me about?
Why does he help me shell the peas?
He throws her out and takes me back.

Can anybody point me to the rest of it?
