Subject: RE: Obit: Hans Hotter From: Peter T. Date: 14 Dec 03 - 06:29 PM I wasn't selling him short, I am fond of his Wotan too (had it on this afternoon in homage). It is just that his Schubert is in another league. I notice in one of the obits (the NYTimes)that he too felt that his Schubert was his best work. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Hans Hotter From: DaveA Date: 14 Dec 03 - 06:19 PM Hi Peter, Don't sell the great Hans Hotter short..... His Wotan on the Decca/Solti Ring Cycle from the 60's still is the benchmark for all aspiring Wagnerian Basses. His "Wotans Farewell" from Die Walkure with Birgit Nilsson was & is pure magic. Mind you, I do like his Schubert lieder also, but then, I prefer Wagner to Schubert. Cheers Dave |

Subject: Obit: Hans Hotter From: Peter T. Date: 13 Dec 03 - 10:03 AM The great lieder singer, Hans Hotter, just passed away. If you have never heard his Schubert song cycles, you should give them a try -- a richer, deeper response than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's (whose versions are in every other respect incomparable). His Wagner work was fine too, but the Schubert lieder (Die Winterreise in particular) are his legacy. yours, Peter T. |
