Beat me to it, McGrath ! (It takes me a long time to write all that "a href" stuff to make a blue clicky). BUT I did link to a slightly different page on the site :)
The site lists all the subjects and speakers right back to 1825/6. One that I remember particularly on there was the "Monkeys without Tails one on evolution that I saw when I was at school (slightly later than 1826 ..)

Yes, John, I am English. I've been surprised in the past, too, to realize that some Mudcat people I thought were American turn out to be Canadian, Australian, English etc.

More information about the Royal Institution Lectures here:
Christmas Lectures

They have been happening every year since 1826 (except for 1939-45) and one of the most frequent speakers in the early days was Faraday. The whole of that Royal Institution website makes fascinating reading.

I've seen her lecture - not bad - I bet she's doing some frantic rewrites at the moment! (Not so good with questions afterwards, but that won't be an issue with these.)

John: they start on 28th December Channel 4 at 1.55 p.m. - subject this year is "Voyage in Space and Time", continue every day until New Year's Day. All the other programmes except the first one start at 12.05 p.m. Speaker is Dr. Monica Grady of the Natural History Museum. She's going to talk about the Beagle 2 mission, big bang theory, solar system, liklihood of an asteroid colliding with the earth, and ask whether life-forms could exist elsewhere in the solar system. Good stuff !

I always enjoy those programmes, too.

I don't get them anymore. Now I give them:

"You kids gather up all that wrapping paper and put it in this garbage bag."

"Don't eat all that chocolate today! There's a good supper coming later."

"Driveway needs shovelling. Better do it before the cars coming over later pack it down in two humps that'll make shovelling bad all winter."

"Don't take off in all directions just yet. Take your dirty dishes over to the sink and help clear off this table. Your mom and grandma have been cooking all day. Don't leave it all for them to do!"

"Alright! Let's all have some quiet time now."

Ah memories. Just like I used to hear...
