Yes the scheme started in Shanghai but has now spread to other major cities in China, Beijing, Guangzhou etc.

I am still waiting for my big win ;-)

I tried to add a post about the New Scientist on Sunday. Nothing specific but if you are doing research on incentive strategies I bet there are many articles with examples in their archive. And anyone else who knows about similar schemes - where people are reinforced for doing stuff, rather than punished for *not* doing it - please add your information, if you'd be so good.

I'm also looking for information on an English (I think) city that was having problems with street-fighting. Some of the dance venues got together in one area and agreed to play slow music for the last few sets. In that area the violence and street fighting sank back to nothing.

A friend told me about this around six months ago - think she'd heard about it on the radio, but I'm not sure; now she says no, 'twasn't her. Anyone know about this?

JTT... awfully sorry - but I don't know much about it. One of my mother's friends was here, and she told me about it having existed here more than ten years ago. She remembers being excited 'cause you could win a black-and-white television :-). I will ask around about it, though, I'm sure someone will know. My parents didn't use bus transportation too much, so they don't know.

There probably still are a lot of people who don't pay their bus fare... it isn't very hard with the system here! You often have to call the conductor and pay him. And the 3-4 rupees saved is a big deal for the poorer people. Maybe they should have the scheme again :-).

On a more up to date area, in order that the government here can get it's take on business in restaraunts, which is mostly cash, they have introduced an official receipt which has a scratch card on it.

The stubs from the books of official recipts are then used to assess the tax due. It has been very successfull as all Chinese like the idea of winning money.

If you uncover the scratch area and it says the equivalent of 'thankyou' (xie xie) then you have won nothing. But there are cash prizes. To date I have won the princley sum of 20 yuan (about US$2.5)

Still it keeps me hoping....

Apparently... they did that a long time ago here in Bangalore. It must have stopped at least 10 years ago. I don't know about Mumbai... I'm quite sure that the scheme isn't still going on, if it did exist there. And I really don't know about other cities... I could ask around if you really want to know!

I know this is wildly off-topic, and I'm sorry to take up space on the Cat. I'm asking here because there are so many quirky minds and world travellers, as well as helpful, nice people.

I heard years ago about an Indian city that had a high rate of non-payment on bus fares. So it instituted a lottery on the bus tickets. The rate of non-payment plunged; in fact, bus tickets became a hot item for trade! But I can't remember what the city was, or find any reference online.

Does anyone know what city it is or was, and whether the scheme is still going? I have a feeling it was Bombay/Numbai, but it's only a feeling.
