I too have an old Sony, a TC-W230, it is a dual deck model but will
only record to one deck, the other is for playback only and this
normal/high speed dubs to the second deck, it does have manual volume
sliders and a front mounted headphone socket and is servo controlled.

As Sony seem to have made a number of this type of deck in the past
it might be worth looking at their site to see what they are doing
now, and also what they have done in the past if possible.

I have my father's dual deck cassette recorder, a reliable workhorse. It's a SONY, I believe, and is probably 15-20 years old, at least. Definitely try the used equipment places. (This thing is marvelous for recording Books On Tape if I find one I like at the library--it records both sides simultaneously in under 10 minutes).

Good point Willie-O, I have a TASCAM 302 here in my Studio which is a professional model but should be capable of taking input from a board and it has a headphone jack and dubbing features. These decks are available used on ebay or digibid from time to time, I would sell you mine but I do still use it about two times a year.

Used electronic gear shops. You might very well have trouble finding a decently setup deck for live recording which is also a double. (If you want a dual to bang off practice tapes for everybody, that might be a problem too--my experience is that the dual drives get a bit wonky and don't run at exactly matching speeds after awhile, so the dubs are not in tune with the masters.)

Frankly if you still want to use cassette, I would be getting a 4-track--should be able to find one for a couple of hundred or less now.

Let me add that this is only a step to record us so that we can hear parts and mistakes and "good stuff", not for a final recording. I've read the threads on MDs etc, and we're not at this step yet, but we may be looking at porta-studio recording equipment, so info about the various in-home equipment is helpful.
I know an analog tape deck is a serious dinosaur, but it's what I need right now, so thanks for any input.    pbb

Hi again. I'm looking for input on decks that have manual record levels and headphone jacks. You'd be amazed at the units out there that don't have both. They seem to be aimed mostly at dubbing, which I'm interested in, but I REALLY need to be able to manually control the record level for recording from our board, and to be able to use headphones. Again amazingly enough, many of the decks that have manual record level knobs, DON'T have headphone jacks. I shopped the web EXTENSIVELY, Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. As always, my limited budget is a main concern.    Thanks all.   pbb
