Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 20 Feb 04 - 03:51 PM BTW, not to nitpick, but Stan Hugill died in 1992, not 1991. Credit the man one more year :-). |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: radriano Date: 20 Feb 04 - 12:02 PM Definately check out Stan Hugill's recordings. The recording of "Shanties from the Seven Seas" that Chanteyranger mentioned is available from CAMSCO, at least that's where I think I got my copy from. You can get pretty much anything from CAMSCO, including my CD - the only reason I only mentioned the CDBABY website is that they have my CD set up to play samples. The Chanteycabin site mentioned earlier is excellent but can be expensive for those of us in the States. I would also recommend any recordings by the English group "Stormalong John" - this is the band that Stan Hugill used as his backup group for a while when he was touring. And, as requested by the original poster in this thread, all of their recordings are a cappella, with the exception of the odd song here and there. I'd also second a thumbs up for the Holdstock and MacLeod recordings. Also recordings by "The Keelers." |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 20 Feb 04 - 11:44 AM Second the motion on Stan Hugill's recordings. Go to www.stanhugill.com. If you can find it, his recording of "Shanties From The Seven Seas" is a rare gem, recently transferred to CD. I'd take SINSULL'S advice, too. Radriano just showed me some songs from The Boarding Party's recent release onto CD, a recording from the vault. Great, unusual stuff! A must-have! Chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: Melani Date: 19 Feb 04 - 07:10 PM Yeah, go for radriano's. It's got great unusual stuff on it, things that you don't hear at every chantey session. The same old stuff gets boring--wow your friends with new stuff. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: Lighter Date: 19 Feb 04 - 05:06 PM You cannot - CAN NOT - go wrong with any of Stan Hugill's CDs. Hugill (1906-1991) was no "interpreter." He was the real thing - most likely the last working shantyman in the English-speaking world, with a dozen or more in sailing ships beginning in 1922. An unforgettable singer and character. Those of us lucky enough to have met him know exactly what I mean. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: Peter Kasin Date: 18 Feb 04 - 10:29 PM The Creighton collection is the real deal. Goes to the source. Two excellent recordings by some of the contemporary singers of traditional chanteys are: Holdstock and MacLeod: "Deepwater Shanties" Louis Killen, Jeff Warner, Gerret Warner, Fud Benson: "Steady As She Goes" These are both no frills singing by first rate interpreters of this music. In my extremely humble, completely unbiased opinion, Radriano's aforermentioned CD "Time Ashore Is Over" is a winner...........alright, I'm on it........but it really is a good one, with some not too often heard material (and you'll know why). *BG* Chanteyranger |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: chantey CD's From: radriano Date: 18 Feb 04 - 11:25 AM At the risk of tooting my own horn, I recorded an album of sea shanties (including a few sea songs) with a chorus of singers from Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco titled "Time Ashore is Over" - you can check it out online at www.cdbaby.com. You might also browse the Woodenships website. Just type in woodenships in the Google search engine and you'll find the url. Radriano (Richard Adrianowicz) |
