Subject: RE: Seeking Folk Clubs in and around Cardiff From: Nigel Parsons Date: 11 Jan 05 - 08:01 PM As mentioned by Splott Man, above. Second Tuesday is Frank Hennessy's Folk club at the BBC club on Llantrisant Road. I'm just back from the January gather, and it was announced that the February date may be in question due to refurbishment of the premises. If you're considering a visit, check first. Nigel |

Subject: RE: Seeking Folk Clubs in and around Cardiff From: Splott Man Date: 15 Mar 04 - 07:57 AM As said Llantrisant is upstairs, but they are not steep. The club is on an excellent website - www.folkwales.org.uk The Lyceum in Newport has steep stairs. and the Norwegian Church has a level access. On the the second Tuesday of the month is the BBC club (Llandaff) with level access. There is a blues club every Thursday in the Gower in Cathays, again upstairs, but I've not been there so I can't report on steepness There is an Alt-Cardiff night usually on the 1st Sunday of the month at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton, upstairs but with a lift, the style of music is towards the newer country/songwriter type, recent guests have been Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez, The Mekons, and Fred Eaglesmith. Fridays there is a smokey folk cum country night at the Blue Dragon Hotel, Newport Rd, Roath. A few steps outside and inside. There is also an excellent Rockabilly session at the Pilot in Penarth, level access as far as I can remember. Taplas magazine, as mentioned by Sian, is excellent. There is also a freeby monthly listings magazine called the Buzz. The Echo has its moments as well. And don't forget Miskin at Easter. All the best, and hope to see you at one or other in the near future. Oh, and I almost forgot a bit of shemeless self-promotion - Resonator (classic Americana) at Cafe Europa, Castle Street, 1st Thursday every month! All the best |

Subject: RE: Seeking Folk Clubs in and around Cardiff From: sian, west wales Date: 15 Mar 04 - 04:53 AM Not so much a club, but the Norwegian Church is a good venue for folk events. It might be an idea for them to get the magazine, Taplas: www.taplas.co.uk. siân |

Subject: RE: Seeking Folk Clubs in and around Cardiff From: Crane Driver Date: 13 Mar 04 - 05:45 PM Llantrisant, as MGAS says, is a lovely club - but upstairs. That said, Mick Tems manages OK after his stroke - but people vary. Best wishes to your cousin and her husband, Jeanie - I hope they find what they are looking for. And there will be a welcome for them on the 'Cat anytime. Andrew |

Subject: Seeking Folk Clubs in and around Cardiff From: Jeanie Date: 13 Mar 04 - 04:15 AM I'm hoping someone here will come up trumps and recommend some folk clubs in the Cardiff area that my cousin and her disabled husband could attend. They've had a really tough year: just as he was due to retire from work, the kids were off and away, and they had more time to enjoy life, he had a couple of strokes which have left him rather badly disabled as far as walking and his eyesight are concerned. They have got themselves sorted out now with transport and are wanting to venture out to places more exciting than hospital waiting rooms and Sainsburys. Can anyone here recommend any friendly folk clubs in and around Cardiff (they live in Llanishen)for them to go to ? They have a badge for disabled parking, and Clive can walk a short distance - or go anything further with wheelchair access. Stairs would be a problem. They like any kind of folk/blues/country/jazz. Clive used to play guitar in a band back in the 60s. They are a lovely couple of people and this would open up a whole new world, and hopefully a whole new bunch of friends for them. Because of his eyesight problems, he hasn't been using the computer - but Gillian told me he's now starting to play games on it. I'm just waiting for him to try Mudcat ! I'll have to start behaving myself on here once my Big Cousin gets here ;) Thanks very much, in advance, for any information. - jeanie |
