As a scientist I have the scientific facts already but the value of this account is in the human dimension.

I really despair of some posters...

There are 2 threads on this topic and i asked earlier for them to be named so the topic is more obvious and I hope they can be combined.
The the plume of radioactive material released by the reactor incident was detectable in the Northern hemisphere as far away as Japan and North America. This topic may be of interest to a lot of people due to the impact of the "accident" on a huge portion of the globe.

I expect scientific value because it's a topic of extreme importance. It deserves better than emotional, political and personal bias.

but this essay is scientifically worthless.

It's a photo essay. Why would you expect it to have "scientific" value?

This is a very important site and I have bookmarked it and sent it to several scientific colleagues.

Thanks to Elena for documenting the site and to Gavin for posting the URL.

I knew it was very bad but this is downright scary...

Melt Down at Three Mile Island will be shown soon on P.B.S. I am just hearing the announcement about this. The mining of uranium is another dangerous part of the radioactive energy and weapons cycle. I have an
aunt who died a lingering, horrible and painful death due to a mysterious cancer-like condition. She lived in Grand Junction, Colorado.
While she was there she lost one baby as a miscarriage or still birth,
and some of the houses in that town were built with uranium tailings
in the morter of the bricks. There are piles of uranium tailings just sitting releasing radiation.

This thread should be re-named " A motorcycle ride through the Chernobyl
dead zone" so poeple know what they will find here. It is a bone-chilling historical treasure documenting the destruction which
still lingers and will cause this area to be off-limits for hundreds of years. I hope the Elena's health is not compromised by her exposure to the radiation here. She carried a geiger counter and goes very fast and stays on the road, as the asphalt does not absorb radiation as do the road side plants and soil. But I feel as if she should be wearing protective clothing and breathing thru a mask or filter.
