The Zimbardo and the Milgram experiments were both referred to on Nightline last night in referencing reasons for the American debacle in Iraq.

Muslim terrorists merely prove in my opinion, that Stanley Milgram was right!All human beings who commit evil acts in the name of religion, obedience to military authority, the demons in their own heads, or to survive a plane wreck in the Andes are HUMAN BEINGS. Human beings can be persuaded to do almost anything evil or good! We have all not yet evolved to a place where each and every one of us can think for ourselves and choose evil over good. We don't even agree on what evil and good are! But someday we all will agree, I believe...

Also check out the Stanford Prison Experiment. I took a class from Philip Zimbardo who conducted it back in the 70's and has apparently dined out on the experience ever since.

Not a pretty thought. But I have to admit, I wondered what I would do in similar circumstances - 18-20 years old and given absolute power over non-people... Another reason not to send our children to war.

Precisely.

The reaction to the Iraq torture allegations is trying to make it seem that what was wrong in Abu Ghraib was people being disobedient - but the indications so far are much more consistent with them being too obedient, in the way that most of Milgram's subjects were.

For those of you who believe that some people are strong enough to resist behavior demonstrated recently by American soldiers in Iraq, let me remind you of Stanley Milgram's famous experiment. His experiment suggests that the majority will deliver a painful shock to another human being when told to do so by an authority figure.
