Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Jun 04 - 04:24 AM Be great to see you Hil - is Richard coming too ? If you get there early enough, I could use you for the busking (with a PA) session as well. As Richard Bridge has said, you'll be welcome at the Style & Winch which Linda & I will also be involved in, the Greyhound is only a few hundred yard along the road, and the "old House at Home" isn't far, so you could sample all of the sessions. Looking forward to seeing you. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: The Barden of England Date: 11 Jun 04 - 03:11 AM Richard - Sorry, yes I think the idea is singer/songwriter at 'Earls' and I certainly hope that people will visit all the sessions. It'll be good at the 'Style & Winch' and 'The Greyhound' too. I hope to have some time out to be able to come and visit. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Jun 04 - 02:50 AM All right, I lied - that must have been an earlier version of the website, or one of Don's postings on this thread or the other thread. My memory tells me that singer songwriters are at Earls, but that might be wrong. But all the participant pubs are within a short walk so you can circulate if you are so minded. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: The Barden of England Date: 11 Jun 04 - 02:49 AM My Guru - I'm hosting the session at 'The Old House at Home' for the weekend, along with Don Thompson and it will be a sing or play, or recite, so you will be more than welcome. On Saturday we will be hosting 'Sussed' for about 30 minutes at around 4pm and then later on at 8:30pm Ron Trueman Borders' band 'Perfect Strangers' will be doing a 45 minute set. Hope to see you and any body else who fancies it there. John Barden |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Jun 04 - 02:46 AM Hi guru It does all depend who turns up, a bit, but I think none are likely to be pure diddly. If you have a look on the website in more detail you'll see that the Style and Winch (where I am one of the hosts, with Dave Bryant most of the time and Bob and Kath Drage some of the time probably Sat lunchtime) is designated as more oriented to traditional (English) song whereas one of the others (I forget which) is intended to be more singer-songwriter oriented. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: My guru always said Date: 10 Jun 04 - 07:03 PM Hurrah! Looks like I'll be dropping in for the day on Saturday!! I see from the web-site venues that there are 'singarounds/sessions' being held in the Old House at Home, The Greyhound & The Style & Winch. Any clues as to which would be more likely to be a 'sing' than a 'play'?? |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Jun 04 - 11:35 AM The suggested campsite is at "The museum of Kent Life" you can find maps here or on Streetmap.co.uk here. The price is £8 per night (a bit steep we thought) whether you've got a small tent or a caravan. There are toilets (with elsan emptying) and a water-point. The museum say that there will be wardens on the gate until 9pm on Friday. |

Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 08 Jun 04 - 08:06 AM The Swan has no website. She runs from the Malta 1145 and hourly, and takes 25 minutes to get to underneath the huge roundabout over the river - ie exactly at the end of the High Street. £3 return, kids £1. Returns to the Malta the alternate half hours - but last departure from town 4 ish weekdays, 5 ish Weekend. You'd think the tourist board would have the maps of the river and the stopping points on their site, and would have arranged late night running for the festival wouldn't you? Joined up thinking? Bah!! |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 Jun 04 - 07:54 AM I'll have to get "Ursa Minor" back into the water for next year - I could sleep on her rather than bother with the caravan - I know the river well and the boat's still got a Medway registration number on the side. Perhaps we should organise a Shanty/Seasong session down by the quay. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 08 Jun 04 - 07:42 AM Here are details of one boat, but the return trip from Malta Inn to Town centre and back is 4 squid, first departure Malta noon, last return to Malta leaves town centre and 4 pm !! Kentish Lady Timetable There is also another boat called the Swan, and I am checking the detail of that too. The Kentish Lady has a singer on Board on the Saturday and Sunday, but seems to be booked for a private do on the FIrday evening. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Bryant Date: 08 Jun 04 - 06:23 AM Joeclones - would it be possible to combine this thread with the other one for the same festival ? - it would make communication easier and save duplication of postings. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 08 Jun 04 - 04:21 AM Website back up. There used to be a boat (called "park and sail") up the river from behind the Malta Inn (ie where the camping will be) to the centre of town. If it still exists it must be the nicest way to get from the camping to the fest area. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Masterson Date: 08 Jun 04 - 03:23 AM If you're just coming for the day it might be good idea to use the park and ride - several on the outskirts of the town |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 07 Jun 04 - 02:38 PM Sorry folks that it's taken me so long to get back here. Camping is laid on at the Museum of Rural Life, behind the Malta Inn on Forstal Road, Aylesford, and I have been informed that the fee is £8 per night per vehicle. Since I am sure they are not offering free camping to hikers, I take this to mean that they are charging per tent or per caravan, rather than per person. Parking in town is very difficult, and often requires some patience getting in to the car parks. Chancing single yellow lines is not advised as the wardens are both swift and merciless. There are indicator boards on all approach roads giving the current space free in all car parks. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 07 Jun 04 - 04:25 AM Hmm, also seems a prob with the website - I've emailed Don |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 07 Jun 04 - 04:22 AM Soundings this week seem to indicate that quite a few will be trying to find this secret folk festival, so it might be fun. See you all in the Style and Winch, which I am some of the time co-running. I think it's in the back room which is a nice little short of shed-cum-barn involving going through the poolroom, out the back and turning left. Good acoustics. If anyone has found out about camping and caravan parking, post it here se we can pass it on... |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 May 04 - 03:16 PM EG, you may wish to email Don directly. |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Essex Girl Date: 28 May 04 - 10:38 AM Thanks for the refresh. We will be there but can we have more information about camping/parking etc. Lots of people are interested who are not mudcatters but live in Kent but need more info. Don said he was doing an interview for Radio Kent but when is this going to be broadcast. The festival is only two weeks away. |

Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Dave Bryant Date: 22 May 04 - 08:00 AM Linda and I will be there - and we should have our small busking PA (3 mics + DI). We will be looking for other performers to work the pitch with us - that way I can bottle the punters while someone else is performing. We will also be involved in running the session in "The Style & Winch". |
Subject: RE: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 21 May 04 - 08:14 PM Thanks for that Richard, you've saved me a job. There is one addition to this, we still need all the seession/singaround performers we can get. Also, M.B.C. are keen to see music in the streets, and have intimated that buskers will get an unusually tolerant reception during the weekend. So come on you buskers, and join the fun. Don T |

Subject: Wat Tyler Festival Maidstone 11-13 June From: RichardP Date: 21 May 04 - 11:24 AM There is an earlier thread for the festival but its title neither says where or when. So I have opened this to attract people looking for a festival that weekend. Visit the website for details. Wat Tyler Festival Website Having been briefed by Wyziwig on Wednesday, it became apparent that this is a very important innovation. For one thing there was an unprooked initiative from the Maidstone Council for the festival to be established. What's more they pressed the organisers to get something going this year. If this festival is a success there is every indication that the Council are willing to support its future development into a very significant festival. If you have a chance to get along, do so. It should be a great little festival on the way to becoming a big one. Richard |
