I'm lucky that I don't live over there. For one who is distant from such things it has been going on longer than I have been alive (and I see similarities in what was happenning in Ireland), so I can't help seeing it as a very nasty version of the playground fued

"But Teacher, he hit me back first!"

Well, at least when I make a spelling mistake, I'm consistent about it. I noticed later that I had made that same mistake several times that day on two different threads.

I like 'capitol punishment'. Usually, Bobert is in charge of the sense making typos of the 'Isreal' type in these threads...

Year after year, lie after lie, bloodstain after bloodstain, Arafat sends others to kill and to die, but endures imperturbably at the centre of his web.

Arafat's career in slaughter started in the late 1940s, when he smuggled guns into Palestine for use against Jews and the British. Very little has changed since then. He still misleads and impoverishes his people, spewing his steady stream of hate into a region that has no shortage of that corrosive emotion.

Maybe now, after all these yaers, there's some hope that Arafat can be toppled. Finally, protests in the streets of Gaza are aimed not at the Great Satan America nor at Israel, but at Arafat himself. Successive Palestinians prime ministers have all but given up on trying to work with him. The frustration, the fear, and the anger Arafat has brought upon his people in order to perpetuate his own grasp on power have now, it seems, turned against him.

As long as Arafat is in power, there's nobody with whom the Israelis can negotiate peace. Arafat wants no peace until the last Jew is gone. Any chance for something like peace in the Middle East will come only in the post-Arafat era.

The only reason he's still alive because he is considered the head of state for what it's worth and it wouldn't be a good idea for Israel to assassinate a head of state.

dyever notice that Ringo Starr and Arafat are never in the same
room at the same time. Could it be a coincidence? Hmm?

Well, if you think it's ok to practice extrajudicial assasinations, just say so. But I think it's pretty misleading for anyone to suggest that Arafat is alive because Israel doesn't practice capitol punishment.

The government of Israel practices extrajudicial assasinations, which are nothing but capitol punishment without the benefit of judicial process. And most extrajudicial assasinations tend to kill a few innocent civilians along with the intended victim.

It is a tragedy whenever an innocent civilian is killed. Problem is, the terrorist masterminds who are the targets of such assaninations hide behind those civilians. In many cases, they are regarded as heroes by the civilians that they hide behind.

In case you haven't noticed, since Israel began killing these terrorist masterminds, the incidents of terrorism have fallen off to almost nothing.

I don't want to sound callous, and I deeply regret the loss of every innocent civilian, but the many hundreds of lives that have been saved by the killing of the terrorist masterminds, makes them worthwhile.

When a terrorist murderer hides behind a civilian and the civilian is killed, it is the terrorist's fault, not Israel's.

Arafat is the posterchild for "Founder's Syndrome"--of course, his departure doesn't mean that good will follow--things can always get worse--

I'd say Arafat is still alive because he's still useful to the government of Israel.

He needed to go long ago. I hope it is very very soon. Financial aid from UN etc. should be contingent upon this, with some sort of say about who replaces him. mg

Bruce, You know he will be alive a week from now. Israeli troops have him surrounded and pinned down in his little bunker in Ramallah. What they are doing in fact is protecting him from his own Palestinian militants. If he were allowed to roam freely in Gaza, then I would not like his chances of surviving a week from now. What many people do not realize is that Israel does not have capital punishment, even for terrorists. Only former Nazis such as Eichmann were subject to the death penalty. Not so in the Palestinian areas. There is no rule of law. If someone does not like you you get shot immediately, no questions asked, without benefit of a fair trial.

The NY Times has called for Arafat to retire. An excerpt:

The retirement of Mr. Arafat, who is 74, would allow the creation of a more credible Palestinian government that could garner international support and claim the moral high ground in the confrontation with Mr. Arafat's equally stubborn nemesis, Ariel Sharon.

But there is, of course, no sign that Mr. Arafat is interested in much beyond his own myth. Pinned down for the last two years in his battered Ramallah bunker, Mr. Arafat has abused his control over the authority's treasury and militias. It seems to be of no importance to him that the Palestinian lands are in total ruin and that the fruits of the Oslo accords are in tatters.

His reflexive insistence that this is all the fault of "Zionists," the West and other Arabs is unsustainable. Mr. Arafat himself bears a large share of the responsibility for these misfortunes.

They have already said it more than once on the other ongoing thread.
The question is " Is this new thread going to serve a useful purpose or is it just going to be a continuation of all the rehtoric that exists on the other one ?" SOL ZELLER

The fountain head of corruption in Palestine is Arafat. All Arab leaders know this fact. It won't be possible for us to gain from the Middle East road map for peace if this man remains in power.

This is from an editorial published on Sunday by The Arab Times in Kuwait.

Read the whole editorial on The Arab Times site.
