I am reminded of the E petition organised here (England and Wales) which collected well over 100.000 signatures.

There may have been even more but the filters set up on the host site - meant that many more - simply because of their name or address - were just not able to sign. For example anybody trying to post with an address in Penistone in Yorkshire simply were automatically prevented from doing so...........As for those in Cockermouth or Upper-Dicker................

Every seemingly wonderful solution - usually also has a down side. Every wonderful invention of man - can also be screwed-up by man.

If I read what the free choicers say here I am reminded of the German expressions 'hang it a bit lower, please' or 'don't you have it a bit cheaper'. What for you seems to be a question digging deep into the human soul, freedom, human rights and all that, is for others a mere question of convenience and time management.

Wolfgang are you saying that having free choice is a bad thing? And that active efforts to ensure that we all have the free choice to express our different opinions is somehow a questionable aim? You may well have been making no judgement at all but just pointing out our differences?

Howevr, the imposition of free choice is probably better that imposing its absence. Not sure if or what judgement you are making but it rather looks as if those who now take hard-won freedoms for granted feel they are superior to and should judge those strive to actively maintain their freedom - using that very freedom.

They are of course free to do so - but it does seem a little ungrateful. Perhaps even a little short-sighted? Perhaps losing this hard won freedom again - may bring a different set of values?

'You Don't Know What You've Got, Till It's Gone'..........

that guy's new show is going to be on soon on that channel. It looks to be better than that other show with that other guy was.

some of dylan's song titles remind me of canned goods with the labels come off.

picky picky. I'm not afraid of any naked woman.

I would also not want to see Roseanne Barr naked.

Or Judy Densch. Or Whoopi goldberg.

But most chick country singers would be OK, except Kitty Wells is way too old.

Wolfgang -

There is a difference between having labels, which may save your life and filters, which may save you time.

I feel sure you have a worthwhile point in there somewhere, Wolfgang. :-)

Actually, I like having the BS in its own section. Great idea. But I think it's weird that some people are so hostile to it that they can't bear to even glimpse that section.

""Give me something or give me something!""

No Susan, what he said was
"Give me something or give me something else!"

or was that some other guy who said that?

I picture them going to their local library and claiming that any attempt at categorisation is futile and superfluous, for all we ever need is the filter of our free choice.

Yeah, that would work at a yard sale or some used bookstores-- and of course I frequent them when I have time, but if I'm in a library I like the guidance of the catalog conventions! :~)

From some of the reactions I wonder how people wrung "You oughtta" about what was intended and written as information for new members who might have googled into the BS secton on some political topic search, or people, like me, who forgot we HAVE these tools.

Never mind, tho, let's all stop putting titles on the songs themselves! :~) I'll know when I hear it, if I want to hear more of it. At the song circle or session: "Right, all, let's do the one that starts dum de dum dum" and no there is no name for the key we'll all try for."

Takes care of all copyright concerns, and neatly. "I dunno who wrote that thing, songs don't have author names on 'em anymore ya know, we're all free from that crap." Bob WHO?

And damn those CD labels. I'm taking them all off! :~)

And my computer's file system-- won't need THAT anymore. I might as well go into my Registry and just start deleting what feels right to delete.....

On the plus side, we need never mention William Shatner again, either, we can just call him You Know That Guy Little Hawk Is Always Bringing Up who used to be on TV in funny clothes..." and our mental filters will prioritize whether we even want to THINK about going there! Hm, why mention LH at all, just "That Guy."

THANK you Wolfgang for leading us all to the land of pure light!

From now on I can be speechless and stand politically corrected.

"Give me something or give me something!" Some revolutionary dude from some country-thingie said it; don't need to say who. :~)

I knew someone who had a flood, and all the labels soaked off their canned goods.....made meals 'interesting' for awhile, but not exactly easy to plan, or welcome when they made a bad guess.

Give ME more filters and sub-categories. I used to wish for parallel threads for 'trad' and 'modern' music....

I LOVE multiple categories...*grin*

Bill Shatner!

Wouldn't it be even greater if we had no titles to the threads for that is already the slippery slope to categorisation (and how often has Joe said that he likes informative titles, but what gives him the right to impose ....) and presumably wrong titles only lead to nasty arguments of pedants. We can all easily open the threads from 1 to 500 to use our right of free choice. How good was life in the old times of Mudcat when we had 'Desparately (sic!) seeking lyrics' 'lyrics wanted' 'lyrics needed' or just 'Desperate' threads half a dozen a day and we had to exercise our free will without being able to filter, for instance, for 'lyrics add' and nothing else.

That's true, Martin, but if I go by my own experience the sensations are still pretty good anyway...and a little loss of sensation is worth avoiding an unwanted pregnancy, I think! As for the naked women thing...well, I can think of certain women that I would be afraid to see naked. But I'm not going to name names. Not me. I'd never do that.

No sir.

It might offend someone.

Well....

Aw, heck!...Rosie O'Donnell, that gal who played "Maude" on the TV show of the same name, Margaret Thatcher, Joan Rivers, and Condoleeza Rice!

(shudder...)

Padre - Shatner has not covered those yet. I'll send him a memo and see what can be done.

I use the BS condom and THEN I use the mental filter, but never wear blinders. :~) If I have time left over after fooling around in the music section, I reset the filter and come down here and look at a few BS threads. I TRACE the ones I want to follow and reset the filters. From time to time a friend who kows my interests PMs me a URL for an interesting BS thread. Sometimes I go see, sometimes I don't.

Or sometimes I don't behave according to my intentions-- sometimes I throw off all my filters and just wade into any and everything and make an a**hole of myself all over again. But my PLAN is that when I do that in future, I mix the music and BS so I don't autoclick my way to a place I KNOW will tend to get me more involved that I actually want to be.

Better posting-through-technology to you all,

~Susan

A "BS Filter" is a misnomer. A True BS Filter would let some BS in and keep other BS out. This is more like a BS condom.

Well, I'm heartily in agreement with you on that, Jim. The best filter is a mental filter, as you say. And here I was assuming that I would be remembered for my brilliant analyses of Bob Dylan's lyrics and my essays on spirituality! (sigh...) :-)

Okay, Susan, understood. No problem.

We all need filters. No way would I have time to read everything that is posted at Mudcat. But the best filter is a MENTAL filter. I use mine regularly.

(Why isn't that in the list of great Mudcat quotes? Why do I have to be remembered for "In every thread SOMEONE has to be last"?)

But I'm happy that thread titles usually give me SOME idea of what the thread is about. Prefixes help do that. I think even more prefixes would be more helpful, but I'm not interested in arguing about it.

Nope, LH, all I'm talking about is using available tools to make it simpler to act upon one's own personal preferences. It cometh from stewardship and intentionality.

Oh! What sensitive souls they must be. I bet those are the same people who bitch about the way Dylan sings trad songs. The question is, can such people (the males anyway) resist the temptation to open a copy of Playboy that they come across while sitting alone in a room somewhere? Can they resist reading something rude someone has scrawled on a washroom wall? Does their sanity and peace of mind hang upon the answer to that? One wonders. Whence cometh this zeal to control others and control the general environment, so that all be shaped according to thine own preferences?

It cometh from fear.

Now there's a very good point! It ought to be bronzed.

Filters are for people who don't have enough self-control to avoid opening and reading and getting emotionally tangled up in things that upset them. Pandora would no doubt have benefited greatly from such a filter. :-)

No more prefixes please, there really are enough already.

They become just more things to argue and for some to be pedantic about and involve yet more final personal judgements to be imposed upon us. I suggest that we are well able to decide these things for ourselves.

I would also question why we would ever need a filter here, when free choice is all the filter we will ever require?

Didja know you can reset your membership options to make it painlessly easy to take a break from the BS side of Mudcat?

Just look at the options in Membership settings (click the MEMBERSHIP link in the topmost page banner):

BS filter Yes No If "Yes," filters threads designated "BS / non-music" out of Threads listing [you don't see them at all].

Mix Music & Non-music Yes No If "Yes," mixes music and non-music threads in the Threads listing [you see them but they are mixed into music threads that might capture your interest].

See ya up there!
