Subject: RE: BS: What've you done to improve the world? From: SINSULL Date: 10 Sep 04 - 06:54 PM You just reminded me: my neighbor in NYC has a grandson who is autistic. When I did my laundry in the basement he would sneak out of his apartment to help me. He loved moving the wet clothes to the dryer and then he would run back home. One day, he came in, pulled on the neckline of an obviously new sweatshirt with a team logo and said "shirt". I said "Wow you have a new shirt. It looks great on you." He smiled, said "shirt" and ran away. A few minutes later his mother came in and I said "John told me about his new shirt". She looked baffled and asked what I was talking about. I repeated the story and she, almost in tears, said "John doesn't talk". He did that day. I don't know that I did anyting but listen. |

He only knew a few words despite being in his twenties. I used to sit down with him and we would have conversations. In nonsense language. Over the months and years that we did this, We developed a vocabulary of sounds, gestures and expressions. We could argue! ( In a freindly playful way) The pitch and volume of our voices would gradually rise to a crescendo. And the conversation was regularly punctuated with bouts of laughing. We both enjoyed it enormously. And while meaning wasn't present in our chats the freindliness that conversation imparts was there. One of his carers pointed out that I was probably the only person who had ever had a conversation with him. George died a few years ago. :o( MofA |

She was the second black woman licensed to practice dentistry in New York City. Bessie Delany became known in Harlem for never turning away a needy patient, no matter how poor or sick. "I remember a child with syphilis, and nobody else would touch her," she said. "I said, Well, somebody's got to help her, so I did." |

Subject: RE: BS: What've you done to improve the world? From: jimmyt Date: 09 Sep 04 - 12:51 PM I practice every day doing some dental work for free. I like to decide on when and what I do, but everyday I do some charity. I treat my patients every day like I would want to be treated myself. I always remember what an old dentist I used to work for said to a patient one day."Well, if I had your mouth, this is the way I would want it treated," he said rather condesendingly. "You know, Doctor," the patient retorted, " If I had your wallet, I would." I try to do the best thing that can be done realistically, knowing that perhaps patching someone up so they can get school clothes for the kids is making a bigger contribution than doing a crown. |

Subject: RE: BS: What've you done to improve the world? From: GUEST,Larry K Date: 08 Sep 04 - 09:39 AM I wanted to talk about what my wife has done to improve the world. Her work far exceeds mine in this area. Aside for her being Hadassa woman of the year (local chapter) president of the Friends of the Library, Secretary of PTO at our school, treasure and fund raiser for our Contra Dance group, I want to talk about her doll project. The local hadassah (large fund raising group of Jewish woman) in West Bloomfield Michigan has made over 35,000 dolls which are donated to all Detroit area hospitals in the past 8 years. The dolls are used for many purposes. Children get the dolls to keep and often decorate them. They use the dolls to say where they hurt or for Doctors to tell the children where they will operate. My wife brought 50 of these dolls to Hadassah hospital in Israrel this past year. This hospital is funded by Hadassah and treats 90%of both Isrealie and arab terror victoms. The hospital was overwhelmed with them and wanted more. My wife has arranged for over 500 more dolls to be sent there. In addition she has taken on the mission of starting doll projects at other Hadassah locations around the country. Several are considering it with Boston being very close to getting started. Will this bring peace to the middle east? NO- but it will make the lives of several of the children a little better. Wouldn't it be cool if other cities started a doll project as well. In the meantime, she has started a new project of Kemo caps for cancer victims- an offshoot of the doll project. 35,000 dolls in 8 years- not too shabby. |
Subject: RE: BS: What've you done to improve the world? From: GUEST,Larry K Date: 08 Sep 04 - 09:30 AM I've given about 50 seminars training people have to save money on their energy bills, therefore using less energy and helping the enviroment. Many in low income communities. I've trained 200 case workers for THAW (the heat and warmth fund) on energy for their work with low income. I've trained 50 FIA (family independence agency) on the same. I've worked with legal aid socieity, society of the aged, and other low income groups on energy. I did a tv show that ran on cable on how to reduce your energy bill and mailed out 700 copies to people who requested one free of charge. I made a presentation to the public service commission in Michigan to bring in 200 million megawatts of renewable energy in the next five years. That is enough to serve 300,000 homes. They accepted my proposal and we are out for bids. I can't think of a cooler project to be working on than in bringing in renewable energy to my state. I book the contra dance series in my area. We provided a free dance for all our members as a thank you this past year. Not bad for an "evil conservative" |

I generally don't participate in much of the political discussion on this forum, and the posts in that thread explain why. All heat and not much light. So, I ask you—what have you done to advance the cause of peace? I spent a hot, humid Sunday afternoon going door to door for the Kerry campaign. The first step IMHO is to make sure Bush isn't re-elected. I know there are some of you who don't feel that Kerry is a "good enough" candidate, but he's the Democratic Party's nominee. Some of you thing that the country deserves four more years of Bush, just as a punishment for our past sins, and to make the economy and other issues even worse than they are now. (Rub raw the sores of discontent.) I disagree. Next Saturday I'll be marching with Women In Black, then more canvassing and passing out literature. You folks who are spending all your time in the forum, blasting other folks for their opinion, need to get out in the real world and DO SOMETHING to make a change. If you have mobility problems, write a letter to the editor or send emails to your friends. If you can't find something, you haven't looked hard enough. See ya' after November 2nd. Maryanne |
