I remember getting blocks of ice cream direct out of the HB factory in Dublin as a kid wrapped in greaseproof(ish) paper...you had to run home quick.

Things ought to be sold wrapped in brown paper, like they used to be, without any of this packaging.

I suppose under Sir jOhn rules, if you bought a record it'd have a picture of a record on the cover. Actually, they used to do that too, back in the days of 78s.

And while I'm in moaning mood What about packaging I heard a suggestion that we ought discard all the unnecessary packaging at the supermarket entrance they lumber us with it let them deal with it

Seriously, John has pointed to a problem of our modern times. Manufacturers avoid as far as possible to put anything resembling information on the containers, packets etc.

If you are in your own country that is usually a minor puzzle for you know how these things look. But have you tried to find a product in another country the language of this you thought you'd understand? The product names are different even if it's basically the same international company. You know you want a fluid washing powder, you know the word washing powder (and guess 'fluid' might be the addition you look for), but you find no product with 'washing powder' printed on it (John's idea with the picture here doesn't really help for washing powder).

You find a shelf with containers looking roughly similar to containers in Germany that could hold dish washing, hair washing, ironing, toilet cleaning,...., and fluid washing powder. You study the big print and read product names like 'Super Shine', 'Justtakeit', 'Smiling Yim'. OK, you now read the small print and detect that the product has extra cleaning power, is 1 1/2 times as cost efficient and 42% more effective since the recent addition of X2SP-extra power tested to the former ingredients.

And has it also happened to you that you stand there at the pot with the boiling water and look for the only information you are interested in when you hold an open bag of noodles? You want the cooking time and you are told that they have been produced using eggs from the 'Free Range' Ranch that have been tested against tubercolitis Type C and you are told 2 recipes you could amke with these noodles. You then settle for the old way, 7 min and take a bite from then on each 2 min to find out later that the vital information was printed in teh before last sentence of the second recipe.

They stopped putting pictures of smiling babies on tins of Baby Food for the very reason John suggested. In Third World Countries, many people are illiterate, and even fewer can read English, so when the multi-nationals moved into the market, they were shocked to discover that people refused to buy it, as they too were working on the idea that the picture on the outside of the can suggested the contents.

A few years ago, and artist had a display of interesting objects at the Brisbane Art Gallery, and one of the objects was a very old tin of baby food with the big picture of the baby on the outside of the Heinz Baby Food can. Associated with all teh other objects, it was just as funny as they were.

Of course a picture of mush is not very interesting really, and we are back to John's original problem - how do you tell the different types of mush apart?

Hello,
I just been to Tecos, for buying food, and I bought 2 sausoge rolls, but i got home, and start to eat them, but they was bloddy Cheese and Onion rolls, i was really fed up about this, i was going to take them back, but couldent be bothered.
It said Cheese and Onioon on the packet, but i dident read it, it is in the same packet as sausage roles, and it confuses people, [and what if i was allercic to chhese hen?
And what about people that can;t read?, how would they know about waht is inside it then?
answer=they wouldent!
my idea=they should put puctures of sausageds on the sausage roll packet.

and how do people know wahts inside that stripy tins anyeay?
[that tesco value tins, all got stripes on them, and you don;t know wahts in it, especially if you cant read, [there could be plenty of reasons for this, ie you could be thick, or not have reading glasses with you, or foreign]
they should put pictures on the tin, they should make it a rule, it wont cost them much.
