Brilliant! Knew I could rely on you all.

Just thought of 'Guys & Dolls'

The oldest original permanent floating Crap-game in New York,

Whooosh

Dammit it's sunk!

Full fathom five thy father lies
And of his bones the coral's made.
Those are the pearls that were his eyes
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change..

Whooosh!!!!!

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds which lower'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried

Whooosh!

Unfortunately, the effect could well become a leitmotif for this particular character, and play.

You could also read "The Art of Coarse Acting", by Michael Greene, for other examples of off-stage effects ruining the action.

From the thread title, I thought this might be a drama review. The original play, "Noises Off," by Michael Frayn, is fairly popular with small community drama groups. It's been presented a couple of times fairly recently by groups in my area. Hilarious comedy.

We liked the drama group presentations well enough to buy the VHS of the movie that starred Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Michael Cain, Christopher Reeve and Marilu Henner. (I don't find any © date on the VHS, but it's at least a decade or two old.)

The "Noises Off" call is traditional at live acts, and isn't limited to the inadvertent flush. Backstage arguments - or romances - can produce some "timely" interjections.

Now o'er the one half-world
Nature seems dead, and wicked dreams abuse
The curtain'd sleep; witchcraft celebrates
Pale Hecate's offerings; and wither'd murder,
Alarum'd by his sentinel, the wolf,
Whose howl's his watch, thus with his stealthy pace,
With Tarquin's ravishing strides, toward his design
Moves like a ghost. Thou sure and firm-set earth,
Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear
Thy very stones prate of my whereabout,
And take the present horror from the time,
Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat he lives:
Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives. [A bell rings.]
I go, and it is done; the bell invites me.
Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell
That summons thee to heaven or to hell.
WHOOSH!

SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER. THESE ARE THE VOYAGES OF THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE, HIS CONTINUING MISSION TO EXPLORE STRANGE NEW WORLDS, TO SEEK OUT NEW LIFE AND NEW CIVILIZATION, TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE. WHOOSH!

Henry V, Prologue:
And let us, ciphers to this great account,
On your imaginary forces work.
Suppose within the girdle of these walls
Are now confined two mighty monarchies,
Whose high upreared and abutting fronts
The perilous narrow ocean parts asunder....

WHOOSH !

....................

I can vouch that there is a theatre in Essex that has the same problem - two dressing-room loos backing onto the back wall of the stage and yes, people do forget about the large notices telling you not to flush. But some plays actually call for an on-stage loo - Does anyone know that wonderful play "Stags and Hens" ?? It's set in the gents and ladies of a nightclub in Liverpool. Let's just say, the toilet is put to good and frequent use.

I remember reading in a book called "Exit Via the Fireplace" (anecdotes about post-war rep companies) about other unwanted sound effects in theatres: An end-of-pier theatre (it could have been the end of Bournemouth pier) where dramatic pauses were punctuated at the all crucial moment by honking ships' sirens and, if you looked in the gaps between the boards, you could even see the waves.

Don't know what the fuss is about..it's just a "flash in the pan"!!
It won't drive anyone "round the bend" and I'm sure it won't start a "chain reaction". Moreover, it is not something for us to get "bogged" down with.
Best wishes.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and               148
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,               152
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack 20 behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life               156
Is rounded with a sleep.

WHOOSH!!!

Apparently a theatre in Wales has warned artists not to use the backstage toilets during performances, as the sound of flushing can drown out the dialogue on stage!
My immediate thought was that it could be a useful sound effect :-

Henry IV part 1

Glendower: I can call spirits from the vasty deep!
