I can highly recommend a visit to Sharps, and not just because Sheila booked me twice in a year.
I had a thoroughly good time there and sing a range of traditional style contemptuos songs with finger picking accompaniment aimed at being entaining.
Good quality songs from a veriety of performers, heckling is encouraged, and chorus singing at one of the best club rooms for singing in.
Keith K played Disneyland Japan a few years ago, maybe Lynne Heraud may turn up!!!
Then Mon 13th Herga, 5 mins Harrow Wealdstone stn 15 Euston mainline for Shep Woolley

Go for it only 5 -10 mins walk from Camden Town Tube, Northern line.

"Sharps is the best folk club in the world" I read somewhere. Certainly one of the best.
It's impossible to leave without a grin on your face!

"You've got to like concertinas"
You're not kidding, with Keith and Ralphie that's three different systems in one act! Keith K is the only person I know who can play both English and Anglo.

Sharps is mainly, but by no means exclusively traditional. It's usually held in the bar (unless a massive crowd turns up). Standard of floor singers is extremely high. Next Tuesday it's Mudcatter Ralph Jordan in a new(ish) duo with Keith Kendrick. You've got to like concertinas...

Thanks again for the info - unfortunately I'll be using public transport, mainly the tube, which cuts down on my options.

I've checked out a few websites and will try to get to as many places as possible - I'm extremely intregued by the club at Cecil Sharp House on Tuesdays... just wondering if anyone can tell me what this is like? Is it very traditional?

Thanks,

-A

Reeling Ealing now defunct

Are you driving or using Public transportation?

El Greko, Herga Kitty attend Herga most Mondays.

Going up the M1 St Albans on Sundays offers a friendly club with Mudcat member 'MGAS' aka 'guru', performing this Sunday.

I've just moved from near you. There's absolutely nothing happening musically in West London nowadays but there used to be a few years ago in Acton, run by the Reeling in Ealing people who occasionally still put on a ceilidh at Ealing Town Hall. You need to go right out to Uxbridge or Harrow as others have mentioned. So you might as well come into Central London. Have a look at Folk London which gives details of events and venues all over the South East. See you at Sharps, Islington, Court Sessions, Musical Traditions, Cellar Upstairs and Walthamstow!

Thanks for that everyone.

I'm in Ealing, and mainly play/listen to songs (as opposed to instrumental stuff), but i like a lof of things.

I'll check out what you've said and I'll try my best to make it on Sunday to the Black Lion - what kind of time does it start?

Thanks again,

-Avro

is it song or music?

Herga is 2 mins from Harrow & Wealdstone Main line stn and Mon 13th Dec is highly recommended as Shep Woolley is booked. An entertaining evening guarantteed with lots of laffs - laughs

the Royal Oak , Peel Road, chorus singing is usually awesome with wellknown names as club members.

I've lost the link, but try the 'Reeling in Ealing' website, or PM Leadfingers here, he's a West Londoner and knows more about that end of town.

If you're inclined to travel, this Sunday (5th Dec) there's a session in the Black Lion Pub in Plaistow, East London (District line, short walk from station), where there will be lots of willing Mudfolk happy to share info with you.

Manitas can give you details of sessions if you like Irish music sessions.

If you like rock and other sorts of music, there is a pub in Brentford called 'The Six Bells' which has live bands every Fri, Sat and Sun evenings. There is also the Rayners Arms at Rayners Lane, which has rock and pop tribute bands on most weekends.

If you're around on Boxing Day holiday (27th Dec), we're having a house session at ours, not too far from the Black Lion to which you're more than welcome.
