Sorcha - as far as news reports go, all people in the area appear to be acounted for, with no serious physical damage. Property was innundated and many locals will gave an unpleasant time as a result. Farmers have also lost flocks of sheep which have been washed away, presumably drowned.
The one thing we must remember is that in Britain such events happen on a much smaller scale than in other parts of the world. People's problems are usually loss of property rather than loss of family and friends. For that I am thankful.

I was in Whitby during the storms in question, the moors took quite a pasting, but the real trouble was in an arc from the north of us sweeping west.

The lightning was spectacular by UK standards, though not by mid-west standards if TV programmes are anything to go by. The bulk of the rain hit the west side of the moors, and the Hambleton Hills, draining westwards via the Rye & Derwent rather than down the Esk, or I would probably be bailing out myself.

Two other 'cat regulars were in a cliff-top caravan, and must have had a better view, not to mention sound effects. When I saw them Sunday night they just said it was opressively hot and damp. This is what we Brits, were we Frogs, might call sang froid.

Close shave, but no problem, this time.

Not affected by floods myself, but glad to hear late last night that my little brother** and family, who live only a few miles from Thirsk, which was badly damaged, are OK.

As I said, I was not directly affected myself, but I was working behind a bar in North Derbyshire on Sunday, overworked in steam bath temperatures and humidity (and suffering from the act playing in the pub; a "boy band", you know what I mean, high nasal tones, affected American accent "And here's to you, Mrs. Rabbinson", and I was starting to mutter comments like, "This band has been together for three years, it's time their b*ll*cks dropped") when the storm hit. I had to rush into the beer garden to rescue and put away some of the furniture, and that rain *stung*, it came down so hard. On the other hand, it was a welcome relief for a whle, to be drenched with cold water.

The bad news for the UK is that many of the homes flooded on Sunday would never before have been considered to be at risk of flooding. No doubt the owners will be compensated, but we can all expect house insurance premiums to rise. Call it global warming or whatever, but Britain does seem to be experiencing an increase in violent weather in the last few years.

(Glossop, where I live, has been hit twice with "once-in-a-hundred-years" floods in the last decade. However, this estimate as to how often such floods can be expected, was made by the water utility company, who reckoned that there was no need to undertake expensive works to protect the local sewage system. It is possible that a measure of optimism and cost-consciousness crept into their calculations. At any rate, they have been laboriously installing new surge drains for the last year.)

Just spoken to my parents in Selby and they are fine...no flooding there, which means Tig and the other catters in that area should be ok.

There was a huge biker meet in Hawes yesterday but that area and part of the moors over Ribblesdale escaped with only a mild shower. We were in Gigleswick and Settle so we were very lucky.

Slightly further North, Durham had a power cut and Edain has lost her router due to lightning, so she is suffering mightily by being cut off from the net.

Liz - did you also hear that there were bikers camped in or near Helmsley, whose tents were washed away?

The good news is that North Yorks Police say everyone is accounted for, so it was property that was lost rather than lives (like Boscastle). Pretty devastating though - some people's houses were just washed away, with all their possessions.

After a near sleepless night with tropical temperatures, after a weekend of blazing Saharan style sunshine, we were greeted this morning by pictures of ducklings paddling round someone's front room!

We had Big Rain in South Yorkshire too but not to the extent of the poor North Yorks people. Our problem was lightning storms. It put our village into a powerless state for some hours.

Ah well, better off than some.

Here in the South Penines, I looked out the door yesterday afternoon to see a sheet of driving rain and hail and a river running down the street. Only lasted ten minutes then it all disapeared.   It seemed to have lasted slightly longer further up.

I drove through this on my way back from Beverley Fringe and have to admit to being terrified.
I've never seen so much water and feel really sorry for those people who have lost their homes and belongings. One farmer reckons that 300 of his sheep have been drowned.
