Subject: RE: BBC Radio 4:Torres Strait music tonight From: Bob Bolton Date: 10 Jul 05 - 01:34 AM G'day Greg, I gather that BBC programs are now available from their web site ... ? I would like to get my old friend Ron Edwards to listen to these. Ron is one of the most prolific Australian collectors .... with a strong Torres Strait interest, since he lives in the tropical Cairns area, which has a strong TI element. Ron has done a lot of work getting recordings of older traditional singers back to their modern communities and families to keep the songs alive - and this sounds like it might have new tips to old material that deserves to get back to the communities. Regards, Bob |

Subject: BBC Radio 4:Torres Strait music tonight From: greg stephens Date: 09 Jul 05 - 01:09 PM 8PM tonight(Sat July 9) there is a very interesting looking programme on. 1899 wax cylinder recordings of Torres Strait Island music(between Australia and Papua New Guinea). You dont hear a lot of 100 year old folk recordings, this sounds an amazing opportunity. Unfortunately, I shall miss it, as I am playing with the Boat Band at the Red Lion, Malpas, Cheshire(inserting a little advert into this public service announcement). |
