Acoustic Roots/Medley Music in Bryn Mawr has a resident repair guy, Dave Dougherty, who does great work. He's done work for me twice before and I've been completely satisfied with his work. It's a little far from Princeton, though.

There's another guy, Jack Romano, in Conshohocken PA (again, not near Princeton) who comes very highly recommended by a good number of people I know, but I haven't had the chance to try him yet.

Check with Larry Broido at Medley Music in Bryn Mawr, PA--he used to own Acoustic Roots, which specialized in luthier guitars, and was one of the best high end guitar shops ever, and he will know everybody that is in the area, since he has been dealing with them for years--

Karl Dietrick worked on my D-28 over 20 years ago. Bucks County Folk has been around for years and can be trusted. Karl has had other staff doing repairs for him.

Also, check out the Guitar Parlor, in Riegelsville, PA.

Dick,

Peter Szego lives north of Princeton (Hillsborough) and has a lot of work done by someone who I believe is quite local and does work for Mandolin Brothers. I'll PM you with Peter's contact info.

Dick, I am very fussy as to who works on my guitars. I have been a bit spoiled by the luthiers at Elderly Instruments who took special care of my instruments. I have been searching for a quality shop that understands acoustic instruments. I believe I have found it in Bucks County Music Shop. Karl Dietericks (sp?) is the luthier. I spent about an hour there yesterday and left him my mid 60's vintage Guild 12 string. That instrument is an old friend and I felt very comfortable leaving it with him. You could tell that this guy is very knowledgable and understands the relationship between musician and instrument.

When you drive up, you get the first clue. This ia a "homespun" looking shop. It is an old house with instruments in the window (UV glass). It is obviously an acoustic, folk, bluegrass type store. Walk in the door and you see Larrivee's, Gallaghers, etc. None of the cheap knockoff stuff.

I will let you know about the quality of the repairs. I had them replace a bit of binding that came off, and do a general setup on the 12. While I was explaining what I want, he asked me to play a rhythm that would demonstrate the hardest I play the guitar, another clue to him understanding his craft. I also left him my little Princess tenor banjo. We had quite a discussion on this as well.

Report coming soon.

All the best,

Mick

Thanx.
The LoPrinzi's are both in Florida.
Thanx for the tip, Steve. Is Bucks County Folk Music Shop good? I'm rather fond of my little Apollonio guitar.

The only one I know of is the Bucks County Folk Music Shop outside of Doylestown, PA, which is not in the Princeton Area, but probably not more than an hour and a half from you.

There's also a guy named Paul Unkert, who has a shop in Toms River. I don't know his phone number. And I'm not sure if he's still in business.

Steve

I have a LoPrinzi guitar that was built in New Jersey around 1980. Tom and Auggie LoPrinzi were in partnership at that time. Auggie now lives and works in Florida. Tom may still live in New Jersey. It may be worth contacting Auggie via his website.
