You'll miss the Newport Jazz Festival by a week and the Folk Festival by two, but there's always neat stuff happening along Narraganset Bay in August. You'll be on the west shore if in Kingston and the east if in Bristol, and not far from Newport in either case. Waterfront pubs generally have live entertainment on weekends; "concerts on the common" and that sort of thing are, well, common. The Providence Journal has a fairly comprehensive entertainment listing on Thursday or Friday.
