Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Sep 05 - 10:54 AM Summing up the thread. It's open season on many "controversial" issues that the Supremes will now be able to revisit, thanks to Bush being able to appoint two justices this year. The politics of this kind of "justice" are despicable. That said, I've heard a number of people speak about Rehnquist as a smart, funny man who ran the court efficiently. I wonder if his character will surface later or be lost forever in the face of the damage he did with the Bush V. Gore decision and others? SRS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Sep 05 - 09:45 PM There was a replay of a Brian Lamb interview with Rehnquist on C-SPAN yesterday. Interesting discussion, taped probably a dozen years ago. I can't make a link directly to the interview come up, but if you click on "Book TV" in the left-hand column you can do a search. I think maybe my firewall is blocking the javascript to bring up the window. SRS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: GUEST,G Date: 05 Sep 05 - 07:08 AM I am a ba dtypisy, I know. 1. I never said anything about the man except "let the body cool first". 2. Never said respect the man, just the passing. 3. That is a given, I don't know you. And may I ask, do you know the deceased? Even a one minute gathering with him? 4. I have no requirement to be your enemy. Why should I? Based on a few mundane comments on this board? That would not be imortant to me or worthy of my time. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Peace Date: 04 Sep 05 - 08:13 PM "And Peace, your existance must be so sad and empty." You misspelled existence. However, respecting a dead person simply because that person is dead is not respect. It's stupidity. I have asked what was so noble about him, and I've yet to see anything posted by you. Your comment directed at me as to sad and empty: You don't know me and never will. So kindly stuff it up yer--well, you get the idea. I do not share your conservative Bush view. Never will, so let's just agree we'll be enemies from now on and let the rest of the crap go, OK? |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: SharonA Date: 04 Sep 05 - 04:12 PM Rehnquist is dead. O'Connor is retiring. A Supreme Court Chief Justice vacancy that must be filled now, and a S.C. Justice vacancy that must be filled soon before Sandra gets tired of waiting for her replacement to be appointed, and just leaves the bench. And both vacancies to be filled by George WMD Bush. And we thought Hurricane Katrina was a disaster!? These two replacements will be eroding what's left of the Constitution long after New Orleans is rebuilt. In the words of Tom Paxton, "How much can the poor nation stand?" |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Sep 05 - 12:51 PM For crying out loud, let the body cool first. I am now beginning to understand how a few of you people think; No feeling, no sense of regard for others, total selfishness and a total inability to think about a view that might be even somewhat different than your own. You must have thought Stalin and Hitler were wonderful human beings. G, you're as bad as anyone you criticise, attacking the messengers instead of the message and concluding with wildly idiotic suppositions. Good manners not being the long suit, public figures who have had as big a hand in overturning the policital will of a nation as Rehnquist did in Bush V. Gore had are bound to be given the bum's rush by his opponents. SRS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Greg F. Date: 04 Sep 05 - 12:40 PM Yeah, the man that ruled that actual innocence was no reason to overturn a [bogus] conviction. Subject: RE: Obit: Chief Justice William Rehnquist 9-3-05 From: Bill D Date: 04 Sep 05 - 11:56 AM from all accounts, Rehnquist was a reasonably nice guy, a pretty good administrator and a hard worker.....he was just conservative as all-get-out. He showed courage, resilience and determination in his last illness, so let's just repectfully bury him and move on. Since Bush will dig up some equally conservative replacement, it will make little difference to the court balance. (except that, it leaves us with only 8 justices, and that makes a big difference as to how cases are decided until he is replaced) The struggle is still about Roberts and whether he is to be confirmed....which he no doubt will be. |
