Speaking of dogs:

My old hound dog lies there sleeping.
He don't know I'm gonna leave
Else he'd wake up there by the fireplace
And he'd sit there and howl and grieve
But my huntin' days are over, I ain't gonna hunt that coon no more
Gabriel something, something, something...
When the wind blew down the door.

Ain't gonna need this house....

"Ain't a gonna live in this house no longer
Ain't a gonna live in this house no more.
Ain't got time to fix the windows
Ain't got time to fix the door
Ain't got time to oil the hinges
Or to mend the windowpanes
Ain't gonna live in this house no longer
She's a gettin' ready to meet the saints.
Ready to meet the saints."

It has rained for days and the cats have cabin fever. Feat or famine this year.

Janie...as a kid growing up in North Carolina, some of my fondest memories were of listening to the rain at night beat down on the Tin roofs of our mill home...(my dad worked for the local cotton mill at the time)
there was nothing else like it...it was like listening to music or my mom singing a song to us before bedtime...
sometimes the thuderstorms were not as much of a treat to listen to,but when those all night steady rains or showers came through, life was great then! sure miss the sound that put me to sleep like a melody!

Already had the first bushfire of the summer here - and it's not summer. It might be lucky that we have had a drought, because it has reduced the amount of fuel available.

Idyllic bushland setting = fire trap!

It's been wet today here in southeastern Alaska and the wind is calm. An audio warning just broke in on the television informing us that we are to expect widespread high winds accompanied with heavy rains tonight. What's up with that?

In 1964 I think it was, hurricane-like winds came up the Oregon coast from California off the Pacific ocean. Roofs came off, chimneys fell, great swaths of forest were blown down- looking like feather fans - some people had no electricity for several weeks.

I happened to be at my brother's house that day, in a narrow ravine. My brother had a hen nesting under an upsside down barrel on the slope past the house. The wind blew the barrel down the hill, under a single strand electric fence, and then it turned around and 'barreled' up the hill again.

So. I like wind. And I like it when this hundred year old house shudders with each blast. But I've gotten a bit leery of the really heavy stuff. Especially after Katrina.

Started pouring here in Maine last night and hasn't let up yet. It has been such a lovely complement to spending the last week in the fog. The forecast this morning was for 3"-5", by noon it had switched to 4-6. I'm curious to see what the news at 11PM has to say. Flood watch in effect for SW Maine, but I don't think too much will come of that. I think it is safe to say that my last day of rangering for the year was a spectacular wash-out.

Beecham's Powders are a patent medicine mostly comprising a powdered soluble analgesic, probably aspirin. Soluble pain relief. Used to palliate the symptoms of the common cold.

Do people not think that these weather oddities might be symptomatic of global warming?

Raining here in north central Vermont and has been pretty steadily and heavily since yesterday, and it's finally cooled off too. It's been a lovely evening to curl up and learn a few fiddle tunes with a cup of tea. Occasional trotting down to the laundry room in the basement show a fair stream of water coming through, but so far it's keeping on going out the drain at the other end. Nice for sleeping.

I worked out in my garden this afternoon--it had been awhile. Most of my flower beds are raised, and have a sandy loam soil that I hauled in a P/U truck load at a time. Even with the nice rain, the beds are not real wet. Just damp down to about 4 inches. Those beds that are a clay loam aren't much wetter.

Not wishing for flooding for anyone else, but I sure hope we get some more of that stuff coming down here in North Carolina.

Watchin' the rain out our computer room window here in MD. I can hear the sighs of relief from our oft-neglected garden below. The rain has also washed out a medieval fair we were supposed to dance and play at today. This is actually a good thing, as I have plenty of stuff that needs to get done but hasn't since I've been working major OT lately.

When it rains it pours, eh?

Is this slopover from the latest hurricane moving up the eastern seaboard?

Sounds like you could use a hot bowl of the turkey stew/pot pie I made last night. It was a double shot--I used a batch of chicken stock in it along with the turkey drippings generated from roasting turkey thighs. Made a pot of veggies with the stock and the meat, thickened it, and served with pie crust cut out in cookie cutter shapes (by the kids).

I love it at the end of summer when the weather finally shifts cool so I can cook again!

I'm sure it isn't the same storm, but we finally have rain here in Fort Worth, Texas, this morning after over two months of dry weather. We had one tiny little squall pass over us a couple of weeks ago, barely enough to count as "wet" let alone rain. I woke to a gentle rain this morning and about a half inch standing in the dog dish out on the porch (and both dogs snuggly ensconced in one of the dog houses).

It also finally feels like autumn this week. We've had very hot temperatures all through September and into October.

I love the smell of rain too! This should be just enough rain to knock a lot of the dust out of the air and give us a fresh sparkling morning tomorrow.

Coincidentally, it's getting on for 1am here now. The 'cat is slowing down - must be time for bed (if I can just get this post to take).

Hi Janie. I'm in Sydney too. It's a nice gentle rain here, similar to yours, and yes, we have had a drought going on here for quite some time. This won't break it, but it's nice. My garden will be happy anyway.

Tomorrow sounds like it is going to be completely different - hot, windy and high fire danger. It's not summer yet, but there always seem to be a few days of "indian summer" weather in October giving us a preview of things to come.

A nice slow soaking rain--it is supposed to continue through tonight. Last night I sat on the front porch until almost 1:00 am just listening to it and watching the tall perennial sunflowers dance in the breezes. (They are one of the few plants in my garden that have done ok in the drought.) Gotta confess I did a little dancing in the rain myself!
