Subject: RE: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Rapparee Date: 12 Nov 05 - 11:23 AM We have problems out here of skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling under the influence. Last year a snowmobiler kept harassing a cross-country skier, whipping by closer and closer, throwing snow all over the guy, and generally acting like the drunken lout he was. Finally, the x-country guy had had enough, whipped out a .357 magnum and shot the snowmobile dead. The skier than took off and left the couple on the now-defunct snowmachine to hike 15 miles back to their pickup truck. Rangers and cops never did catch the skier, but neither they nor the public as a whole seemed to be too upset about the incident. (When the couple finally did get to their truck and called the cops their blood alcohol level was found to be .07; given the time and exercise they expended you can only guess what it was when their snowmobile was shot. For reference, .08 is considerly legally drunk out here.) |

Subject: RE: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Nov 05 - 10:13 AM There is actually a new Internet problem that came up as a question last week on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me that was SUI--shopping under the influence. I kid you not! Online shopping when one is tipsy. It apparently leads to a high number of returned items. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 11 Nov 05 - 02:00 AM Thanks, Mmario & Helen. I had guessed "bicycling", but "boating" never crossed my mind. Maybe because I never use the term "boating". It's either "sailing", "fishing" or "wasting gasoline". |

Subject: RE: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Amos Date: 10 Nov 05 - 04:13 PM I think we should establsih a category, LUI, for those who can be shown to be living under the influence of demagoguery, hypnotic persuasions, exposure to advertising fliers in their mailbox, or The Shopping Channel. Also sporting events and new truck promotions, voting for fascists out of fear, parroting talking points from a political mill, or spouting politically correct timidities like calling blind poeple visually challenged. Subject: RE: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Helen Date: 10 Nov 05 - 03:31 PM BUI (Boating Under The Influence) "A boater with a blood alcohol content of .08% or more shall be presumed to be under the influence of alcohol. BUI is a class A misdemeanor punishable up to one year in prison and a fine of $6,250. If the boater is found guilty of BUI, they will be required to complete a safe boating class, they may lose their privileges to operate a watercraft for one year and they may also have their boat registration suspended for up to three years." Helen The Google Queen (uncrowned) :-) Search term: BUI offence OR BUI offence "under the influence" (with double quotes) |

Subject: BS: What the Heck's a BUI? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 10 Nov 05 - 03:09 PM There'a an advertisement for a lawyer on the front of my telephone book. It says she specializes in "Juvenile Offenses, Felonies, Misdemeanors, DUI/BUI Defense". Okay, "DUI" stands for "Driving Under the Influence", but what does "BUI" stand for? "Bicycling Under the Influence"? "Bartending Under the Influence"? Just plain "Being Under the Influence"? Google has been of no help other than indicating that "Bui" seems to be a rather common Thai first name. Does that mean all the Buis in Thailand are breaking a law they don't know about? |
