Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Azizi Date: 05 Dec 05 - 08:48 PM For the record, my comment "I'm kinda partial to Chriskwanzakkah myself." was not to be taken seriously. I meant no disrespect for the religious holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah, or for the cultural holiday of Kwanzaa. |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Kaleea Date: 05 Dec 05 - 08:15 PM Golly gee, some of my best buds are Chriskwanzakkah celebrators. Why, I bumped into one just the other day whilst picking out my Chriskwanzakkah Bush as they were playing my alltime fav Chriskwanzakkah album "We Wish You A Merry Banjo Chriskwanzakkah" over the the loud speaker. |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 05 - 04:30 PM You have a lot of great stuff, Dick, but some of these CDs are exclusive to Collector's Choice Music. If you had them too, then certainly we'd be happy to give you the business. And as far as I know, you don't carry a lot of rock and roll or jazz.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: dick greenhaus Date: 05 Dec 05 - 12:25 PM Gee. I always thought that CAMSCO was the place to go for hard-to-find music. But what do I know? |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Azizi Date: 05 Dec 05 - 11:05 AM M.Ted created that word "Chrishanukwanza" not me. (see his 05 Dec 05 - 12:48 AM post}. I'm kinda partial to Chriskwanzakkah myself. |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: GLoux Date: 05 Dec 05 - 10:54 AM Given the title of this thread, I think some of you might be interested in this web site and the recordings available from it. I got an e-mail from Joe Bussard (amazing vintage 78 guy) last Friday talking about it... http://www.fonotone.us -Greg |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 05 - 10:50 AM It was considered out of love, Azizi. Most likely, the majority of tracks were played by white musicians, playing ragtime, marches and popular tunes from the turn of the century, if Vess Osman and Fred Van Epps are typical. Ragtime is a staple of plectrum banjo playing around the turn of the century, and it too is interwoven with African American culture and history. Ragtime, like early banjo music for me has a very positive image because at a time of blatant racism, music often ignored those barriers between people and became a shared heritage, just as the other folk music we all love in the Cat. It's less about division and more about sharing much of our culture that has a common element and history. I'm afraid that if I try to pronounce that long word you coined, Azizi, it would make me sneeze. Have a joyful all of the above.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Azizi Date: 05 Dec 05 - 10:39 AM I just found out that my name was being taken in vain on this thread, so I decided to come and check it out. But instead of being dissed, I find out that people are chipping in money to buy me a Chrishanukwanza present. Wow! I've never got a Chrishanukwanza present before! My mother raised me with manners so if I got a CD of banjo music from you guys I would say "thank you" But-hint hint- I would muc prefer Olantunji's "More Drums Of Passion" or the Zaire children's choir singing the "Misa Luba" to a CD called "Ring Ring De Banjo". And about that banjo music- I gotta set things straight. It's not the banjo music I hate. I hate the IMAGES of widely grinning Stepin Fetchit type caricatures of banjo playing slaves that were used by proponents of slavery to demonstrate that my ancestors were happy and content in their servitude. My only problem with banjo music is that it reminds me of those IMAGES. And if you remember from that thread Martin Gibson started called "Azizi check this out" or some such title, I'm trying to replace those images with the positive picture of the Black grandfather teaching his grandson how to play the banjo in Henry O. Tanner's painting "The Banjo Lesson". Will this CD set me back on the path of dissing banjo music? If so, maybe you need to forget about sending me that CD, and donate your money to charity. But, they say it's the thought that counts. So again, I say thank you kindly. And Happy Chrishanukwanza to all! Azizi |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 05 - 09:38 AM Don't know much about Ollie Oakley, greg. Remember him mostly from Ollie Ollie Oakley, all in free. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: greg stephens Date: 05 Dec 05 - 09:34 AM I was looking at "Ring ring de banjo" in an old song-book just the other day, Jerry, and having a little chuckle as to its double (in)appropriatenss in terms of Azizi's pet hates. And then you came up with this recording, very coincidental. You are dead right, I'm sure I would love this record and I am going to get it. You mention Fred van Epps and Vess Osman. I seriously hope there's some Ollie Oakley on there as well. |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 05 Dec 05 - 09:25 AM Tell ya what, Mr. Ted... PM your mailing address... I'd like to chip in, too. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: M.Ted Date: 05 Dec 05 - 12:48 AM I don't know Jerry, their are Rassmussens in my family, I swear to God, we must be related, because I want everything on that list--I am a big fan of Fred and old Vestal, and the rest go without saying--I must admit to being very fond of collectors choice, as they seem to be interested in all the different sort of things that I like-- I'll kick in for a copy of the banjo thing for Azzizi--I think I still owe Greg a couple bucks, so, if it's ok with him, maybe I'll through that in, and it can be from the both of us--kind of a Chrishanukwanza present--I think I've got her address around here somewhere;-) |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 04 Dec 05 - 01:37 PM Now, Greg! I value Azizi's friendship too much to do that. Not only is it banjo music, but the title is in slave dialectic. A double whammy. I bet you'd like the CD though, Greg.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Severn Date: 04 Dec 05 - 12:39 PM A valuable catalog I discovered while sorting mail in a post office and have been using for a while. |

Subject: RE: Hard To Find Music/Found From: greg stephens Date: 04 Dec 05 - 12:37 PM That "Ring ring de banjo" would be a classic Christmas present for Azizi, Jerry. Why not send her a copy? |

Subject: Hard To Find Music/Found From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 04 Dec 05 - 10:30 AM Every once in awhile, I come across music that I've been looking for for a long time... or a particularly great bargain. Here are some recent ones I thought I'd pass along in case anyone else is interested. These are all available from Collector's Choice Music at www.ccmusic.com I'm ordering these two: RING RING DE BANJO 27 tracks of virtuoso banjo by some of the all-time greats, including Vess Ossman and Fred Van Epps. I've been looking for Fred Vann Epps on CD for twenty years, so I was very excited to see this. It's am import CD at just $11.95 WE'RE GONNA ROCK, WE'RE GONNA ROLL A 4 CD set of seminal early rock and roll on 4 CDs... it has a lot of unsual, hard-to-find tracks on it, including That's All Right by Arthur Crudup, Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton, Move It On Over by Hank Williams and Sexy Ways by the Midnighters It also includes a 68 page booklet. All for $24.95 I've picked up a ROOTS OF DOO WOP 4 CD set in the past done by the same people (Proper) and it is great. There are also two 4 CD boxed sets of Jug Band Music at $29.95: MEMPHIS JUG BAND and MEMPHIS SHAKEDOWN; MORE JUG BAND CLASSICS. And then there's a 4 CD boxed set of Charlie Christian... I didn't even realize he recorded that much material, and in reference to another Mudcat thread, Phil Och's first two albums on CD for $12.95 a piece There's also Missisippi John Hurt and all sorts of other stuff to break the bank... I take no responsibility for putting you in the poor house. Jerry |
