A couple of nights ago the Ontario Provicial Police simultaneously raided 3 private dwellings in Orillia, my hometown, and uncovered 3 large-scale marijuana-growing operations. A street value of $1.8 million in plants and equipment was siezed in the raids. Arrests are forthcoming. One of the houses was about a block from a public school, in a nice upscale neighborhood. People on the street said they'd been wondering what was going on with that house, because no one seemed to actually live there, but people would come and go at odd intervals.

The cops evidently spent some time planning this raid before making the big swoop on the 3 houses in question.

I was in the drugstore earlier today, and heard 2 of the staff there talking about it...as is everyone in the downtown. The girl (in her early 20's, I'd say) says, humorously, "What a drag, eh?"

"Yeah," laughs her coworker, a young guy of maybe 19. "They wiped out my new crop." (he was obviously joking)

It would be my guess that about 75% or more of the kids in town smoke marijuana on a casual basis, and of course so do a lot of older people. Nothing has really changed that much since the early 70's. Same old nonsense. The price of local dope is gonna go WAY up for a bit...that's my guess...but no one's basic habits will change one iota.

Oh, well...it gives the police those rare moments of glory that every cop dreams of. ;-) Sort of like the windmills to Don Quixote, and about as meaningful in the long run.

Certain irresponsible people on this forum have suggested that Chongo Chimp is the kingpin of the Orillia drug trade. It's just not true! Chongo's drugs are all legal....booze and cigars. He's old-fashioned that way.

This will probably turn out to have been the biggest story in Orillia all year. We'll see.
