Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Les from Hull Date: 21 May 06 - 04:46 PM Maggie and I had a great time, especially the Oak Room evening singaround - such a pity we had to leave early. Thanks to everybody involved in the organisation, and also to the the staff of the Black Swan, who dealt with the long queues very efficiently. |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: stallion Date: 21 May 06 - 04:50 AM So, we had a bigger room for the musicians and it was still heaving, sadly I counted fifteen musicians who couldn't get in, The marquee was excellent (even though I say it myself) the sing around was more like the Tap on a friday night, albeit more structured, we had to rein in the musicians, Everywhere else was jammed packed. It was really good to see so many youngsters listening and playing, after 11pm all bar one of the performers had left our room and we were singing in a room full of youngsters, brilliant, the other performer was Laura, her surname escapes me (a senior moment!) but she is performing with Ma and Pa at the cleethorpes festival, she was brilliant. What is really heartening is the volume of youngsters listening and playing and enjoying the music a real tonic. Thanks to all who contributed in the session in the Oak Room, I was going to list everyone but it would be too long for my attention span, it also covers up for my shocking memory for names! We shall have a "Post Mortem", the thing I like about the York day of Folk is that it is free, performers don't get paid, it is all for the joy of it. However it is growing in popularity and may have to expand, that means extra admin and extra venues and extra cost. we shall see what happens. |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Carol Date: 21 May 06 - 04:31 AM Great evening singaround, despite musicians trying to make it another music session, my three heroes held it all together only trouble was we had to leave a 9 to catch the last train home! Please do it all day next year!!!! |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: GUEST,Pete Date: 19 May 06 - 06:13 AM Someone reckoned that the Session has moved to a bigger room - will that be right? Last year's session was brilliant, but a bit of a squash especially for those not in the 'Inner Sanctum' |

|
Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: MoorleyMan Date: 17 May 06 - 01:53 PM Wot Stallion sez makes good sense. A compromise had to be struck somewhere, and nobody offering to help run a singaround would want to knacker their voices. I'm hoping to have enough voice left to come and join the 4.30 set, but it'd be great if some of you come and do the same for me in my own set just that bit later as that will contain some good chorus songs too! Carol - don't fret, just come to the Rolling Folk Club and put your name in at the door and you'll get to sing, no problem, it'll be run scrupulously-fairly. It'll be great to see you. Only three days to go now - and the Black Swan's hosting James Keelaghan (one of Canada's finest) tomorrow (Thursday) so go along and enjoy! |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: stallion Date: 17 May 06 - 01:25 PM carol and quackers, ten of us, ron, martin, me, Whistler John, Steve T., Ruth , Graham Metcalf, Damien and Frank are all going to the "dog" on Friday night, Ron can't get away 'til 9pm so we will be arriving about 9.30pm. Lots of singing assured! Black Swan, there is a rolling folk club in the usual room upstairs, just put your name down when you arrive. The sing around in the day is a bummer but since I do not want to be left holding the "baby" all day and night and people complaining when I have a break it is thus. However, as I have said elsewhere, we are going to put in eight songs in our set, all bar one have familiar choruses so join us in them. (4.30 pm Marquee) |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Geoff the Duck Date: 16 May 06 - 04:38 PM If what is happening at York during the afternoon doesn't suit you, but you are going for the evening, why not show your face at the Yorkshire gathering and then decamp to York later. Just a suggestion. Quack! Geoff the Duck. |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Carol Date: 16 May 06 - 04:30 PM I suppose seriously is the folk club for booked spots only or can anyone turn up and 'get a turn'? |
|
Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Carol Date: 16 May 06 - 04:29 PM Nick you had me all ready to get there for mid-day for a sing but if it isn't going to happen until 7.30 I'm not sure if it's worth the travelling - how about a singaround or even a sinaround in the garden, someone's big car, a minibus???? |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: stallion Date: 16 May 06 - 05:59 AM ok nick, the reason for the sing around not being on during the day is that for the last two years we (2BS&S) have done it all day and all night and wrecked our voices, no one actually pledged support to help and it was felt an evening session might be better. The other consideration is that the Marquee was well over subscribed and the over flow was to be accomodated in the ground floor front room, a sort of second Marquee indoors! Dan Webster was in last friday and a bit upset about not getting a slot in the Marquee having been given a spot in the overflow "Marquee", gives you some idea of the quality this year. I think if enough people had come forward at the meetings it might have been accommodated but at least this way I only get to sing for three and half hours instead of seven! We look forward to seeing you there, we haven't forgotten you we just haven't had the time to get out to see you. Apologies to anyone else who would have liked a sing around in the afternoon, however, we are on at 4.30 pm and we are going to cut out the banter to get eight songs in, all but one will be chorus songs which we expect people to join in with, I think you will have heard them at some time either on the cd or at the tap. cheers Peter |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: Nick Date: 15 May 06 - 07:07 PM Looking forward to it - my only slight qualm being that there is nowhere for anyone to sing during the day this year (until 7.30+ in the evening)unless you are a performer which seems a bit weird to me. I enjoyed last years informal singaround (including with stallion & co if I remember) - but with the exception of the upstairs room (depending how that's organised) there doesn't seem to be anywhere you can go and share a song with friends. There is a programme at York folk day. I may, of course, have misunderstood. |

Subject: RE: York Day of Folk From: MoorleyMan Date: 15 May 06 - 06:25 PM Loads to do, loads of fab acts to see, and all for free. All will no doubt be expertly coordinated by Maestro Roland and his great team from the mighty Black Swan Folk Club. See you there! M |
