Just now found this thread.
I was in Austin around 1995 and in time for Antone's birthday;
his birthday was always observed with a concert --
not a club gig, but a concert in a hall.
And who should be the headliner, but Buddy Guy.
Guy came alone and played with the freelance blues musicians in Austin, enough to form a band of their own.
He was electrifying.
He played until late, and I remember
going out to the parking lot afterwards, and
there were Mexican fruitbats zooming all over the lot
(it was summertime, I believe).

He'll be missed. He had an impact on the music scene all over Texas. There are lots of blues clubs that never would have opened up if Antones in Austin hadn't been so successful.

We got just the news that Clifford Antone was found dead today in his home of an apparent heart attack at the far too young age of 56. Clifford was an important figure in the Austin music scene: impresario of the legendary blues club, president of the record label and owner of the roots and blues record store, all of which took his name. He was a tireless promoter of the blues, not only through his various businesses, but as an educator, teaching courses in the blues at both the University of Texas and Texas State University. If anyone could be described as a true blues "fiend" it was Clifford, but his impact on the entire music scene in Austin can't be underestimated.
